Vibration when coasting only.

G’day all,

Have searched the forums and haven’t found anything definite -

After a hard offroad trip the d2 now has a driveline vibration when coasting along mainly noticeable at speeds above 50kmh. The vibration disappears when under load/ accelerating and reliably returns when just coasting with no throttle input.

Have tested for bearings and haven’t found anything. Has anyone encountered this before? Seems to be gradually getting worse.

2002 td5. 200 000km.

x2 the DC and also the rotoflex in the rear and the shafts in general eg bolts, slip joint weights, dents. I'd also look at the bushes between the axles and the radius arms which may be allowing greater rotation than normal which might induce vibrations. Also the wheels for dirt, weights shifting and loosened nuts.

Also check tyres,my work van had vibration when coasting,at speeds over 60K,no vibration when on accelerator.

A rear tyre was the issue.

Another for checking the front shaft, including for spline wear.

My first car was a Jeep and the splines were flogged on the front shaft.
It would only really have a bad vibe on coast, it wasn't too bad under power
It's a similar feeling to a flogged DC joint.

Thanks to all the replies!

Greased front and rear shafts at splines and cardon joints, vibration now gone!

Now i’m concerned about premature wear which maybe have been done due to them being dry. Whoops.

Last greased maybe 20 000km ago.

Righto, I'd be grabbing the shaft very firmly with both hands and giving it a tug. [wink11]

Double entendre aside, we're checking for play anywhere, so a hand either side of the DC joint and either side of the spline, our feel is pretty sensitive and will pick the tiniest amount of play.

I had similiar symptoms. It was the rubber drive joint at the rear diff. (Rotorflex?). New cost approx $70. Easy to change. One bolt was slightly loose but when I tried to tighten it I discovered the rubber was cracked.

I found it really easy to check the front drive shaft.
Take it for a drive, then climb underneath and see if anything is hotter than warm.
You can't afford a front driveshaft failure as if your unlucky it can take the gearbox with it if there is a complete failure.
They all fail especially if the vehicle is raised with the original shaft.

Front drive shaft failed about 1000km after re-greasing. Rattling noise and vibration under load, luckily pounced on it before it completely destroyed my underside.

New driveshaft in and all good!
