View Full Version : Camping etiquette -having a gripe

For 2 weekends in a row I have had the experience of my camp being 'invaded' by other 4wders who have thought it ok to camp within spitting distance of me when there was ample space to be a respectable distance away. The first time we had found a wide river flat and staked a claim in the middle. At around dark a convoy of 7 vehicles drove through our camp without a nod or a grin then returned 5 minutes later and set up sooooo close it was ridiculous. I had words with the closest of them and they did move away a few feet-but our quiet space was ruined. They could easily have camped another 50m away-and it would have been easier to bare if they had at least said gday and apologised for cramping us-as I am aware of the club phenomenon when it is late in the day and they are looking for a spot. Anyway bad feelings all round made worse by loud music til late! We left very early. The next weekend totally differnt spot My nephew and I found a nice spot on the Howqua. This is a busy place but there were at least 2 good spots about 50 metres from us up for grabs-where did the next car park-10 metres from us! and proceeded to set up. This bloke was at least friendly but had no awareness that he was uncomfortably close until I told him. He moved a small distance away and I parked my car between us for a bit of privacy--10 minutes later his mate turned up and camped in the spot he had just moved from--we moved 50 metres to another perfectly good spot. I have thought about this and not wanting to sound racist (as I would be p$#@ed off whoever did this) these 2 mobs were new Australians and probably from the middle east somewhaere....I have decided that one thing going on here is a totally differnt sense of personal space-especially compared to someone who grew up in the bush! They had the vehicles and the gear - but no appreciation for bush etiquitte(however you spell it).
Thats my gripe for the day!

I agree, it really spoils a trip to have people set up so close. Especially when it isn't neccessary. We had this happen to us on a few occasions on the beaches in QLD (Inskip, Straddie etc) Being a bit of a larakin at the time we usually had them wanting to move before they'd even finished setting up 8)
I was a bit of a bastard when I was younger
But only to those who deserved it.

I don't think where they come from has any relevance to the discussion. If they're knobs, they're knobs.
If they're ignorant and don't know what they're doing, or that they're wrecking your weekend - tell them!
I hate it too, when you go away, particularly to a quiet spot, and that happens. I generally politely tell them to make some space, or move somewhere else. Depending on the response that comes back, or actions taken, I then become a little more persuasive.
I.E. F*CK OFF - you and your gear (make 'em think they're got a Wolf Creek/Deliverance camper type beside them)!!!!

I agree I camp a lot and it never fails to astound me how close people come to camp next to you when there is plenty of good spots elswhere. We were on Moreton Island a couple of years ago for our annual father son trip and it was september and the island on the ocean side literally had about 15 odd camping groups. This is on the side where you can camp for 20k's or more I cant remeber. This group came and camped within 15 metres of our tents with no one else within screaming distance either side. We swore turned our stereos up and they still would not F off during setup. I think some people feel safe or think it is the communal thing if they are close by. Personally I am there for the peace and quite and appreciate the great outdoors not the feeling of suburbia.
This sort of thing has happened to our camp groups probably 30 percent of the time and it really sh!ts me off.
BTW this is really good therapy to get the bad vibes of d!ckhe@d camper out of my system.

It is all to do with pespective and your own preferences. Often we end up combining camps with others, but usually upon invitation either way. It does annoy me when people have to crowd you and then have no respect for other peoples preferences. Usually there are ways to get back at them.

I will agree with that comment regarding new ausi's and camping,
quite often I find our overseas friends bunking night next to us when we wake up in the morning,
More often then not, they aren’t meaning any offence, and it Is often that they dont know where they are allowed to camp, so they set up in an empty camp ground right next to the only other tents they can find,
2ndly they tend to have a different concept of personal space, as most other places in the world are so over crowded in comparison to Aus, that it is hard to get a feel for what is natural personal space,
But I notice that although they are camped close to us, they often keep to them self,
Not meaning to stereo type, but if I am going to have anyone rocking up and setting up a camp right next door to me (that wasn’t a rover driver https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ ) , I would like them to be Asian, in all my previous experience, They have camped quietly, collected more firewood then they use and leave more for others, have small fires, Rarely play music, never loud,. Never sit there revving motors, or wake me early with motor bikes,.. very polite usually spend time bush walking,.. if it wasn’t for the dome tents set up behind the pajero’s you would not think there was anyone there,…
Asians campers are great
Dirt bike kids campers tick me off, and I know there are so many good bikers out there,.. but it really gripes me when your driving down a bush road, and a 12 year old on a motor bike comes flying the other way, and what’s with the power pipes on these bikes,
Our big landy motors are no where near as loud,.. and after waking everyone and driving around louder then a metalica concert, they come back to there camp site deaf, so they crank the music up louder then the bikes!..

Yeah right on CraigE https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I've met some great people camping or in the bush, and made great friendships that way too.
But when you want you want to get away, it's by invitation you should do that (meet people), not set up in someones back pocket, hey.
What happened to "G'day mate, mind if we set up here?"

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ love the stories people, especially Fenian and the Wolf Creek comment. Cant comment on the camping stories as this Friday is the first time I will have been camping since I was a kid, and I guess I will have to tolerate the group around me, oops thats right GCLRO and Brisbanites https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ . Though I guarantee these types that set up close are the same twits who when you catch a movie ( on rare occasion, those with young kids or remember will understand) and your snuggled up, in a reasonably empty cinema and these "closeites" come and sit either right next to you or right in front. A loud " can you believe it" to my partner generally tends to embaress some of these idiots to **** off and away. Ditto, feels good to get off my chest https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ ,

Yep, on both counts - and I used to ride trail bikes so I'm not anti-bike. (I'd have another tomorrow if i was allowed.) How often have you had the bloody kids revving the bikes up at the crack of dawn after you've had a nice night around the campfire with an ale or three.

Its not just camp grounds. Down here on the NSW South Coast we have some beautiful beaches. But nothing annoys me more than you find a deserted beach, pick a spot, and then someone comes and sets up right next to you, with 5km of beach and you're the only ones there, they almost sit on top of you. They usually have a dog or 3 (which get wet then run over you towels), noisy kids with wayward frisbees etc. Maybe they think we are going to save them from drowning? An you are right, they are almost always tourists and new australians to boot!

Man, oh man,
I get SO FIRED UP about this kind of topic!!! :x
The amount of times this happens to us when camping is just NOT RIGHT!!!!
We had: Had words, played loud music, etc etc - NOTHING sways them! - not even ASKING politely!
One couple even waited until we went off for our 2 hour 4WD and when we came back (this is AFTER chatting to them - and telling them that we were expecting more campers for our group later that day) they were camped in the exact spot we'd said we were reserving!?!?!
WHAT THE?!?!?!?!?
(though i must say, they musn't of had a great time, as the boys whos spot they stole - kept saying out loud "Dont worry guys, they'll go off somewhere soon leaving their site un-manned - then we'll see who's the smartarse then" etc) so, they never left their site all weekend!
I find the same thing when i go fishing - Why come and start fishing 5mtrs from me - WHEN THERE IS 200mtrs of wall to fish off?!?!?!
I have had some serious words with 'fishermen' because of this and when the talking fails - I start casting over them (with OLD tackle on board) and saying "Oops, I'm really sorry- like i said I am a girl, so, i cant cast straight - you might want to move before you lose more of your tackle"(whilst inocently batting my eyelids - shees  ) usually sorts them out that way!! LOL
Some people are just like this and need a 'helping hand' to be NORMAL, CONSIDERATE people!
ok, my large rant is over! phew! (feeling calmer now! LOL)
Cheers

Oh man I am so anti-social when it comes to camping it is not healthy.
To illustrate my point here is a story almost from the other side.
We made a run from our previous campsite to Adcock Gorge on the Gibb River Road. I'd been there before and it was a lovely little gorge so we planned to get there and even though it was going to be late dusk we'd set up - light a fire and get the Furphy's cooking and the James Squires would keep us refreshed while waiting for the Cab Sav to breathe. We would look at the gorge and have swim in the morning. That was the plan.
Could I find Adcock Gorge? Could I f&*k. Up and down that bloody road. Up and down every side road. The bloody gorge had disappeared.
Anyway there was a little campsite by a creek with some people camping there. Out of desperation (it was now dark) we drove up to ask the guy about Adcock Gorge. He said he did not know it but he had noticed our vehicles passing by a few times and if we were looking for a spot to camp for the night, we were most welcome to share his fire.
He was a nice bloke. But we said "Thanks very much, but no" we ended up setting up camp in a pretty crappy spot about 100metres away - we were tired hungry and thirsty so we did not care. What worried us was appearing rude to that nice gentleman and his wife who gave us permission to invade their privacy. But we like our own company on camp.
btw. It turned out that we must have missed ADcock by a matter of metres - the manager ofd the station had removed all sign posts and hidden the road due to the rubbish and damage tourists had done to the area - sad.

You guys are way to nice. I take metalica CD's with me for that reason, if someone pulls up to close crank up Metallica to distortion level If that fails I walk around naked, if that fails ask them if they have any animals I can have for sacrifice and it just goes down hill from there.
Never had a problem they just go away - mind you I am bloody ugly and have one leg and many scars which all seem to help :-)

Christine and I were looking for a site before the crowds arrived
I see this bloke set up with a camper, dunny tent, fire, and the kubota taking up approx 50m circle. He looks at us and says "Better not camp here, I am expecting some old footy mates, and they are very loud"

I think its true that living in Australia with such a small population in such a big land we are more sensitive about personal privacy and like a greater comfort zone than people who have grown up in highly populated places.
When I first went to Brisbane I thought it was crowded and disliked people being so close.
Then I moved to Bangkok!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :!: 8O
Over here they have been conditioned to tolerate people being close to them all the time. It makes me uncomfortable, even after a year.
On the Bangkok Skytrain (which makes the Sydney monorail look like a kid's toy) personal space is the gap between having your elbows by your side or half-extended!
Lots of people over here blot out the world by walking around with earplugs into their MP3 players. If they can't have physical space, they'll have mental space I guess.
So when Asian campers set up close to you in Oz its probably that they actually think they're quite a distance from you, compared with what they're used too.
They're just not used to the space. From Bangkok we could fly to Japan or Spain in the time it takes to fly across Australia. They just can't comprehend the size of Oz.

I think you are right, and it could easily be someones first or second trip into the "wilderness", they see another camper and home in, as maybe they think we are experienced in all matters camping...
Then the proximity thing kicks in ??
Maybe we should all be complimented.
And here's another thought, maybe they think scatching yer nuts, having load music etc is all the go..
Remember Thier a weird mob??

You occasionally see blokes urinating in public on the side of main highways here (public toilets are a bit lacking), so I guess an Aussie male behaving that way wouldn't faze them.
Take it as a compliment if they get close - they're probably overwhelmed by the wide open space and feel the need of reassuring companionship. Just show them some Aussie social customs and you'll be fine.

Thats not as funny as it sounds----the second bloke said to me (before I told him to move away) "I'm glad someone else is here, it makes us feel safer" FFS!!! (He didnt see my blood stained axe!!! ).. And the hobyars up there are deadly.....
He then spent the entire night fishing-trapsing through my campsite that I had moved to to get away from him and his crew - as if we were not there! It actually got to the point where I had to laugh-he had no idea at all  and he was quite cheerful about the whole thing?
This thread has given me some great strategies to make sure this wont happen again.

I've been fortunate that I haven't had too many ugly camping experiences. I don't normally go camping on my own and m,ainly with the club or in a large-ish group.
I had an incident when I went to Fraser a few years back that people got too close, but I asked them we had a few people who mwere camping with us that they were arriving the next day they moved away. We had some 'god botherers' near us but they were okay and didn't bother us. they did sing there religious jibberish, but a bit of AC/DC noise cured that
But all in all, I haven't been in any blues with irate campers. The way is see it, you approach the problem aggressively it makes them angry and it can get ugly. Aggression should be used only when nessacary, they'res too many angry people in the world as it is https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I've just come back from a week's camping.
For the last few days I've had a quiet spot all alone beside a river. Yesterday, a couple cruised up and down the riverbank - about 500 metres of cleared camping spots. There was nobody anywhere along that section. Then they drove back and parked next to me.
They got out and went for a walk.
Later I toddled off for a bush walk and got back to their empty car still there but not sign of the owners.
I cooked dinner and about 2 hours later they returned, in the dark, and proceeded to set up camp within 15 metres of me.
Had I not been leaving the following morning (today) I'd have said something. I later commented that I'd be leaving them in peace in the morning to which they replied "But then we'll be all alone!"
Far out!

I always camp alone, usually without any hassles but one time last year was the worst of all.
I set up camp beside a river and it was nice and quiet until a bloke arrived in his patrol, inspected my campsite, then proceeded to tell me to move as he and his family liked the spot and wanted it. I very politely told him to find another spot. He told me there was a great spot about 50 metres away that would be good and I should move there. I politely told him that if he liked it so much he should take his family there. His next statement floored me when he said "Well there are more of us than you and we want to camp here and we will". I camly strolled over to his patrol wearing my old army jacket, which still had my regiment badge on it, and informed him that if he proceeded to set up his tent I would shove his tent so far up his a*se that he could use the awning as sun shade for the rest of his trip - he left in a cloud of dust. I hated to say something like that in front of his kids but the guy was an a*sehole.
At sunset 7 'yotas arrived and disgorged their miserable excuses for human beings. They set up about 20 metres from me, made so much noise with loud music and their bloody generator running it made sleep impossible, until very very late. Fortunately they left the next morning.
At lunch time a bloke pulled up, got out, said nothing and started picking up the firewood I had collected. I asked him if he was alright and he just stared at me blankly saying he needed firewood. He too was told where the firewood would end up if he didn't put it down.
Mid afternoon another group of about 20 people arrived and admittedly they did set up camp quite a distance away but the kids just wandered through my site like it wasn't there. 2 kids even opened my tent to look inside. I collared one of the adults and tried to explain camp behaviour to him and I was told to chill out.
The crunch came at 6.00pm as I was eating my dinner. A young couple arrived and started to set up their tent about 6 bloody feet from mine. I asked if they were serious and both just stared at me asking when I was finished with the fire as they wanted to cook their dinner.
I had had enough so I packed up and moved to another spot I knew about 5 kms away - alone at last.
I'm not a very agro person but some people really loosen my screws.

when I was younger about 4 car loads would go camping two cars to tow the boats and two with trailers filled with beer and the camping gear on top we would go early to get the good spots, and start to build a large pile of empty cans at the front this seemed to stop people setting up nearby.

Good deterant. Why is it some people have to be rude and arrogant. We all want to get away and you have imbosiles like that to put up with.
Like I have mentioned, I've had no real bad incedents with annoying campers, we're usually the noisy ones https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Nothing to do with the thread - but......
took the family to New Farm park one arvo over Easter. Was packed with the chardonnay sets, the trendies, metro, homo and a few hetrosexuals etc.
Anyway this family are having a picnic with the rug out, they had 2 young ones & then 2 small dogs start humping each other - shagging like their lives depended on it - right in the middle of the blanket! https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
We're laughing our heads off and the Mum & Dad are looking a bit akward, not doing anything, but their children are having a giggle. Then....
some young girl about 20 comes and gets the dogs and says "oops, sorry!"
Wasn't even their dog https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ My wife & I were in hysterics https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
(of course had the muts shagged on our blanket, I would've thrown 'em in the river)
