View Full Version : Disco drivers dont wave
Lindsay

I used to drive a rangy-and it was like being a club member with waves at each one passing --I have been disappointed to find that now driving a disco, this rarely happens. Why is this so?
Come on disco drivers-do you wave to discos?

If they are snorkelled, lifted, bull barred and muddy...yes
Defenders..yes...but you know the fender drivers never wave back...they are snobs

Lindsay,
We did this post a couple of mths ago...but I wave to everything LR https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Get little response back around town- they're all shopping carts, school taxis or ego rides
But i still wave!!!
Although I do miss most of the Freelanders (sorry folks) - most of their drivers - don't even know they've got a LR & they don't really stand out - so they're gone by the time I see them

Don't do it - it's worth the frustration for the gratification of the one wave you get back!!! I pass 2 disco's every morning and wave, they used to - now they look at me like "would this ****** stop waving at me"
So I wave even more!!! https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Pedro, I actually saw the Bub91 mobile, heading Nth on the Bruce past the Narangba turnoff Friday week ago - but you were 5 lanes and a gully away!!!!

I have found that most RR and Defenders wave to each other. Only about 25% of Disco drivers wave to any other LRs inc Disco's.
A lot depends on situation, it happens that I miss waving some times for various reasons.
Usually if I cant wave or miss my wife and kids do.

This ol subject  , Im a random waver now, or at least a raised finger, I wave at most Landies I see around coast and on my occasional sojourns up to Brissie. Good with the sunroof, as sometimes people dont see me wave ( eh Bolts https://www.aulro.com/afvb/) cause of the black car, dark tint etc, but the wave is there,

I usually wave to disco's tend to get a response from the modified or dirty ones the cleaner they are the less chance of a wave

Usually as I near another LR, I'll look to see if the driver is looking my way (ie an interested LR driver). I'll wave if he/she is looking remotely interested, however won't bother if their staring into space, changing CD's or telling the kids off!
That being said, I look at the driver of every Defender type LR that I see on the road, with the objective to wave to them. Unfortunately as it appears I only drive a "mundane LR", that is a Series 2 Disco with snorkel and bullbar, 99% of the time I do not see any acknowlegement from them. I did have one glimmer of hope though, a few months ago on Hoddle St, Melbourne, a bloke with a really nice army spec Defender or Series of some kind. I gave the wave, he gave the acknowlege smile and nod. It felt good to break through to someone in the middle of the city!

Well i have something amazing to say, after bringing this up about a month or so ago, i've been getting responces from other Landy drivers including Defenders AND 8O Disco drivers, one shorty series driver even waved and nodded in the rear view mirror as i was coming up behind him, and tooted his horn as i went by https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Also there's a dark green Series 1 Disco, lifted, large tyres, offset rims and driving lights across the roof rack in the Heathcote area that has waved a couple of times which is a change (very nice looking Disco) there has also been a couple of Defenders in the Shire that haven't waved (hope they weren't you Bushie).
All this has restored my faith in Landy owners now, so no matter i'll keep waving now, remember it could be me you pass and if i recognise you from here, be prepared for a pizzling

Since I last posted on this subject we've done a fair few kilometres. I'd have to say that out of the dozen or so Defenders we've passed going the other way, ALL of them waved enthusiastically! Then again, with the rack and roof-top tent sitting up there I'm tall and hard to miss!
I never even received this sort of response from the Jeep-set when I was driving one of them around, and the so-called "Jeep Wave" is a thing of fanciful fiction.

Fair enough-my problem is that I am not lifted-but I do have muddies, bullbar, winch and a rooftop camper. lol. I might put this thread up every month or 2 and then eventually word will get out by osmosis that it is just not kosher to not wave at a fellow landy driver-and if you dont you can expect landy road rage incidents.

I wave at ANYTHING with Land Rover badge!
SO many soccor mums in Freelanders look at me like I am some idiot, but one day I will wave at a soccor mum that wishes she was in a Disco and wave back.
Then there is always the old man towing his 20 foot caravan in his Disco, thats waving at you coming towards him. Some of these old guys have incredible eye sight for their age, spotting other Land Rovers and waving from miles away. I like to wind down the window and wave BIG to these old guys!
Then there are the guys with Fenders with the bull bar, spotties, lifted, muddies and covered in prime aussie terra firma, that only lift a single finger off the steering wheel as you pass them. They don't need to make a gesture, you know, that they know, that you know, what they know.
Then there drivers like me, who have got three boys, and likes to run up the beach camping and fishing every chance he gets. My second eldest boy counts how many Land Rovers he sees when ever we go out. By model too I might add...Discos, Freelanders, Fenders, RR etc. And every time he sees one, it's like he has never see one before. He will then inform you if it's an older or newer model and "most prolly got a (insert engine type here) in it,....most prolly", providing he can't see the back end of it.
If you miss a wave at anything with a Land Rover badge with this 8 year old in the car, be prepared for a grilling. And under NO curcumstances refer to any as a "Land Drover"! A swift and effective course in correct english language will be administered!
BTW back on topic, the boy just informs me, "You are by far more likely to receive a return wave on the highway, on account of all the shopping trolleys around town!"
His words not mine.

Like last time this topic was raised the 130 I pass regurly on my daily run. The missus waves enthusiasticly back to me but when the bloke is driving I get this glare. She will even wave when they are both in it so maybe he thinks something is going un between us https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I look at all the Landy Rovers I see and wave back to those that wave. I do automatically wave to all series and defenders though.

i was stopped at the lights coming off the charlestown bypass, just day dreaming, and i saw a red 4 door rangie with green P plates turning across infront of me it didn't register what was going on untill he waved! i waved back, but i don't think he saw...
i usually wave at all LRs, if i see them (or i actually realise they're there), but rarely get a wave back...

On a recent trip to Darwin and back, the most enthusiastic wave I got was from a 130 heading south. Old geezers with caravans were good for a wave about 30% of the time, but overall my wave return rate was only about 10 - 15%. Pretty dissapointing, considering I was driving windows down with a big arm out wave happening for pretty much every vehicle heading the opposite way.

I wave at all LR products.
When in Defender 90% wave back (Defenders that is), Disco's never same Rangies, series almost do also.
When in Rangie, Rangies never wave back or any of the others. Defenders disapointing that they never wave, my wife says" don't forget your not in the Defender now", she's right of course (well on this occassion, everyone can get one thing right sometime).

Ill always have if I get waved at, and will occasionally wave, though the kids do all the time. I used to wave fanatically when I first bought the D3 cause I was so excited ( and still am) but 9/10 times got strange looks. However I have noticed as there are more D3's on the road I am waving and getting a nod/wave back. If I pull up next to one at the shops a conversation normally ensues on the great choice in vehicle https://www.aulro.com/afvb/.

Was that an Xtreem 90?
If it is I see it regurly ahead of me in the traffic but never seem to catch up with it so they never see me.

I always wave at all Landy drivers. Many wave back but it depends on where you are. The ones that get used as school buses by their drivers are usually too busy doing the make-up, let alone looking at the road or, heaven forbid, wave to another landy driver!
It's the same when I'm out on the bike. Harley riders hardly ever nod or wave back. In the city, in the heat of traffic war, most riders are looking out for their own survival and rarely take the time to wave or nod. Again, I wave or nod to anyone on two (or 3!) wheels. At least I know that I have acknowledged my brethren.
Mind you, now that I'm in the Try-too, Landy drivers give me a strange look when I wave at them... 8O 8O
