Hey

I don't like to be a worry wart but my car has done 80000Km and am wondering what can potentially fail around this time and what perishables should looked at being replaced before breaking... Seals, gaskets hoses or more serious mechanical issues

Cheers

A good starting point would be the shaft between the Gearbox and Transfer Case (some call it the Spud Shaft). This is a weak point in all Pumas and will leave u stranded if the splines let go....

Clutch, transfer case centre diff, differential crosspins, spud shaft, intercooler hoses, etc etc

Well the list is endless.
Have you had the intercooler to intake elbow replaced both mine went at 60K just go silicon and be done with it.
My engine went @106K so be prepared.

At 140k I had my clutch and transfer intermediate shaft replaced. I do a lot of heavy towing with horses and could not risk a break down. The clutch had started doing the knock knock so was a little worn, but not bad. The shaft I expected to be nearly dead but Interesting to note that the splines were not worn at all, they were definitely a bit rusty, but no appreciable wear. And no lube. I would have probably done another 140k... But I replaced it with an ashcroft shaft with the lube boot.

What was completely knackered were the brass bushes on the center diff. 2 were gone and the other two were wafer thin. I blame the 2.2 for this, as it has a great deal of torque and it's easy to spin an inside front wheel on roundabouts, or when towing up some hills on the road. I have two 2.2. defenders, and this one was very very clunky. After the clutch and the center diff it's a new vehicle again - well worth the money. approx $3.5k
