110 car topper boat thing

Ok, so as the title suggests I've not really got into boats a great deal, however I do love going fishing and I acquired a boat "at the right price" but no trailer. It's an old quintrex 3.7m i think. I was thinking it might be good to carry it on the top of the FFR. Had a bit of a google and search around on here but noone seems to be doing it - or at least admitting to it online!

Yes if the boat has been in the salt then salt goes on the car! but if I'm fishing there then the car is getting the sea breeze and i'm probably driven on the beach as well, and isn't that what they are for? I'll wash it.

I realise that all the gear needs to be removed from the boat prior - I've got kayaks that I carry on the roof of the 90 - it's a pain but at least I wont have yet another rego to pay! I already have 3 cars and 2 trailers.

Anyone done it? got some pics? ideas/suggestions?

I got a free boat from my dad. He built it and estimated the weight at around 60kg. It’s not!! (Closer to 80kg I recon). If the ground is level and I go into beast mode I can left it on using a roller on the back rack. As its on the absolute limit of what I can physically do, it’s stayed in the garage (used it once). Two blokes could do it safety but really needs a boat loader for one person to load it. Do you know the weight of the boat?

Have you got a winch on the car? If so, there’s a heap of options open to you to have the boat winched onto the car.

My boat is an easy 2 person lift and carry around the yard. So maybe 80kgs.... ish.... I'm thinking it'd be a good excuse to get a winch quicker :)

How do you find it driving around? it's is heaps top heavy or largely fuel guzzling?

3.7 would be the longer category for boat toppers.....

When I was researching up to 3.3 or 3.4 was the longest of the light weight tinnies I looked at.

Without a boat loader I would imagine it would be a struggle....

I pulled the pin based on how many times I would actually use it along with all the gear you need to store.

I wasn’t worried about what the fuel bill was going to look like and was counting on the poly airs to reduce body roll.

If you’re not touring than it would be easier to purchase a trailer.

In a similar vein, a mate of mine put a hand winch onto the front of his camper (with the wire running across the top towards the rear) to assist him in packing away the rather heavy roof as he has back problems. That may help.

I agree. Like i said - I got the boat at the right price, so size was 2ndary. I'm not really looking forward to the storing of gear HOWEVER, I don't think I'd use it a huge amount so for the times I do it's hardly worth having yet another rego and trailer to maintain. I'm moving more and more to being minimalist with my gear so the boat wouldn't have much in it. I'm old school fisher - no fangle depthsoundercomputerthingamajig for me, I use skill and .... ok yea I just use luck. :)

I drove from south of Sydney to Brisbane and didn’t really notice any difference in handling or fuel consumption!
