View Full Version : Garaging a D3 Battery Wise

I have just acquired a D3. It's not going to be driven much except for camping/touring duties and am wondering how long I can garage it without any battery issues. It's a TDV6 SE so not all the bells and whistles.

I left mine for six weeks recently, checked everything was turned off before I left, lowered it to access height, and when I returned...it started (at 5am on a very cold Melbourne morning), albeit a bit slowly, but it did start and run...

A cheap electronic timer and a 5amp battery charger (or a solar panel on the garage roof) would keep it in top condition for as long as needed.

A CTek battery charger will maintain it perfectly forever. You can leave it permanently connected. I’ve always used them on cars I’ve had stored for extended time with no ill effect.

Not too keen on that mate. Last year we were away for a few weeks and had my 25 Amp Projecta 7 Stage charger on the 'tilly battery. Oon return, I had one stuffed charger and low battery, courtesy of an Asian gecko fried on the circuit board . As the top shed is like a refugee centre for these little blokes, I'm not going that way.

Then I’d go the solar route as suggested. One of the 10w direct plug in would suffice? Just need to extend the wires by the sound of it to outside the shed?

The main thing is make sure its locked, the vehicle will never go fully to sleep until it is locked.
If you want to leave the bonnet open to charge/access the battery, bridge out the bonnet switch, then the vehicle can be locked.
I recently just locked mine and left it for 4 weeks, started no worries.

No gecko nor anything else will get into a small CTek, there are no openings in the case. I leave an XS0.8 on my motorbike all the time. For the car, I'd suggest the CTek MXS5.0 which I have for the Rangie.

Tis true. The ctek is fully sealed and practically waterproof. I should add Ctek is the gold standard for long term storage as used by practically every exotic car owner world wide, and most car dealers too.

I put all my batteries onto a multi stage charger for 8-24 hours every couple of weeks regardless of use. I know a lot of people say multi stage charges or DC-DC charges do nothing and an alternator is all you need to keep them charged but I know I get on average nearly 10 years from a battery and a lot only get 5-7, some even less.
In my opinion using a multi stage charger is the only way to get max life and a reliable use . I am no expert but assume its from the trickle charge that constantly keeps them at 100% full

25amp?
overkill for trickle charging.
unless your battery is like 1000AH

Eevo, I have tractor, boat (3 batteries), ride on, 'tilley, 2 Discos, both with dual, camper trailer, the missus vehicle to keep topped up and use it as a power supply. I did replace the old 25A with a 15A anyway.
