It would appear that this year some changes have been made to what modifications can be performed on vehicles, in this case I'm referring to gvm/gcm upgrades, it looks as though gcm can now never be changed from the original manufacturer rating,I never really new they could anyway, but have recently started looking around for towing purposes and stumbled across these new laws. As far as I understood a light vehicle can now also not tow any more than 3500 kg no matter what the plate says. For instance we have a 130 that has recently been registered by ourselves and it says 3500/7500 gcm/gcm on the government website, giving us a 4000 kg rating, is this wrong or have I made a mistake in my understanding of all this

Ps, can someone please fix my title, it's supposed to be GVM/GCM....

I’d go by the manufacturers handbook.....the government website could be wrong

Looking at the Puma specs https://www.landrover.com.au/Images/LR9624_2015_Defender_Spec_Sheet_300x215_Con_LR_tcm 296-122934.pdf
A 130 Cab chassis has a maximum payload of 1607KG and a maximum tow load of 3500KG. GCM comes in at 3500 vehicle + 3500 tow or 7 tonne

I’d go by the manufacturers handbook.....the government website could be wrongI agree, however the defender book I believe says the same except instead of giving a gcm it says 3500 gvm and 4000 for trailer with the correct style 4 wheel braking

Reading the original article the GCM upgrades were only allowed prior to the initial rego. If you can prove to the relevant rego authority that your vehicle was rated with a 4 tonne towing capacity in the case of being weighed then you would be good.
The original article looks like a bit of a storm in a teacup to me and would only effect vehicles being sold as part of a brand new package with a gooseneck trailer and tug both being supplied by the trailer/caravan reseller. I guess the solution in that case is to swap the tow vehicle from a mid size ute to a small truck or an American pickup.
