Defender 300tdi Turbo Replacement

Hello Brains Trust.

I think the time has come to replace the turbo on my Defender. I'm getting a lot of oil in my inter cooler and a bit down the side of the engine block. Also on a trip to the cape i noticed the boost gauge not showing normal behaviour.

Anyway its 20 years old and done 164k with quite a lot of shaft movement.

What i want advice on is what to replace it with. Obviously Garret with manifold at $1200+ is probably the best option but has anyone had success or failures with cheaper units.

All opinions will be gratefully received.

I got an uprated Garrett turbo and manifold from JC in Tassie that I’m getting rid of fairly soon. It was eventually going to be fitted to my D1, but since the D1 is going, it’s gotta go. That might help you in the meantime.

I spent a bit and bought a turbo techniques hybrid unit off allisport, very happy.

My turbo technics VNT has done 300,000 , not as good as it used to be , but still working .
I am not a big fan of Alli Sport , but the turbo has been good .

I notice that the warranty is not covered if the vehicle is fitted with a raised intake.

Apparently has something to do with the rubber inlet hose(from airbox to turbo).
I think it supposedly collapses internally under a lot of boost.
So the snorkel is supposed to inhibit the air into the airbox, and under a lot of boost, the intake hose can suck itself inwards.
Kind'a makes sense. If you remove the airbox end of the inlet hose and block the exposed end with your hand with engine idling, it seems to suck itself in quite easily(at least the D1 type does).
I'm sure the Defer inlet hose is longer again, so may be even more prone to the issue with the added aspect that it's path is close to the rear of the engine(ie. hotter/more pliable).

I'm also looking into all the options I can source for a VNT for my D1 too.
And this info came up as a possible cause for concern for Allisport.

I've then started looking into silicon intake hoses(damned expensive) and also to see what anyone may have done in terms of a steel tube job.

I had a Garrett 2556VNT on my 130 with bigger intercooler and radiator. Don’t have it anymore, but it went very well.
