Hi all...newbie member here.
Just got my TD6 SE a couple of weeks ago and now looking for a roof rack, I don't know if it's just me but not a lot of options are coming up?
I like the look of the Voyager roof rack in the US but its $1700...any Australian outlets selling anything worth looking at?
TIA

I can tell you what not to get! The Rhino SX legs do not fit to the rail correctly in that the top of the leg is not horizontal. I've sighted two other D5's with these and they show the same issue as I have.

APT Offroad had a temporary rack for his RTT on his D5 at the 70th and said his production rack would have been ready a week or two after.
I don’t think it’s in his website, might be worth giving him a call....I think he is working on a few bits and pieces for the D5

Hi,
I have the Front Runner Slimline II but I am not 100% happy with it. I called into the Roof Rack Super Store over the weekend and the boys think the Rhino Rack Would suit it better and at this point I agree. Rhino would sit lower to the Roof which is a plus in my eyes. Also the Rhino Rack can be longer. Also with Rhino they have a Rack that sits on Cross bars. So I can pop the Rack off if I am not using it. ie lets say mounting a Hard Shell RTT.
I am still looking but at options. But am very seriously considering swapping my Front Runner for the Rhino One.

I went past his workshop the other day and there was a D5 with one of those low profile storage containers on the roof.
So i recon he has some kind of rack sorted.

It’s was more than likely Bens with his Hard Shell RTT which do look like storage. Be interesting which rack he had fitted.

For fans of the Prospeed Roof rack (probably the best looking rack for the D3/D4 IMHO, just very expensive in Aus)...I contacted them to find out about D5 racks.
There is one in prototyping and hopefully would be available closer to year end.

Do these racks attach to your roof rails or direct fit to the roof without rails?

Hi. After lots of research and looking at all the options I have found that the rola rack fits perfectly over the rails.

Can you show a picture of that as I was planning to get Rhino Rack bars, to go on the fixed/flush roof rails? I was planning to put the UHF antenna on top of the front bar as a temporary location, and remove it when not needed.

Since fitting mine I've seen two other D5's with the same racks and the same issue.

Do the Rola bars you fitted have a T-track for attachments? I looked on their website but the roof rack selector doesn't show anything suitable for the D5.

Does the rail sit flat on the leg? This pic sort of looks to show the same issue I have with Rhino.

RonYes it has the t track. I purchased the 1350 long bars as I have a roof top tent. They are the standard bar that goes with all the rola gear. Supercheap have it all on special at the moment.

I emailed Rola to check the part numbers for the D5 only to be told they don't have a product to suit a MY18 D5.

Embarrassingly what I said previously is incorrect. Apologies to Rhino :oops2:
If I had installed them correctly they would have been (and are now) fine. I'll blame Rhino's picture style instructions for not being clear. The trick with these legs and bars is that you have to wind the clamp out further than what you would think you need and then push the clamp in at an angle to get the cross bar clamp to rise up through the top of the leg, then slide the cross bar over the leg, tighten the clamp so it pulls the down onto the cross bar.
Hard to explain in words but once I understood how the clamp operates all was good.
I can tell you what not to get! The Rhino SX legs do not fit to the rail correctly in that the top of the leg is not horizontal. I've sighted two other D5's with these and they show the same issue as I have.

I'll see if I can pick some up at the Sydney 4WD adventure show in 2 weeks.

RonSame here Ron. About as low profile as you can get. Annoying how the rails are raised at the front and flush at the rear. Cancels out a lot of options.

From what I've seen, Thule's fitting kit seems to get around this locking onto the lip at the top of the rails which would allow the bars to be positioned anywhere along the rails.
On a side note, do I get a 2m or 2.5m wide awning?

Picked up a 2.5m x 2.5m Rhino Sunseeker awning this morning. Might have to wait a while to fit it all, as it is a birthday present :D

The bars are on, they fit very nicely on the rails. And you can position them anywhere on the rails too:

I took off the part of the Thule Wingbar end caps that swivels up to get the awning closer to the car, also drilled an extra hole in the part of the end cap still on the car to allow the bolts that attach the awning to the brackets to slot into the end cap and so get the awning as close as possible to the cross bars.
When I take the awning off, I can put the swivel parts of the end caps back on so you won’t see the holes I drilled.
The second photo is from the rear with the boot open showing clearance between the awning and the boot and spoiler.

The Thule bars came with foot pack #4080. On the inside of the roof rail the foot sits against the roof rail, on the outside of the rail it holds on to the lip in the rail. You can position them anywhere on the LR flush roof bars.

Thanks, everyone. I fired a few emails to roof rack companies (inc Rhino) and I’ll wait to see what they tell me. An option seems to be to get the flush rails, but that’ll be a bit more expensive
