Moved from my ATB thread,

I need to replace the Pitman arm ball joint & Tie rod ends

I have been quoted around $440 to do these, I will probably source the parts from the UK a lot cheaper, I would buy the whole pitman arm instead of the ball joint kit, but I only had the Pitman arm ball joint replaced about a year ago, so is it worth doing the conversion to the straight discovery one and upgrading the rods?

I have seen the kits on the Gwyn lewis site, but if it is just a straight arm and a disco 1 HD Kit I could source the bits probably cheaper than what I have been quoted for 3 ball joints and labour.

And has anyone done ot on a Puma? I have seen a few threads regarding this but none with part numbers or if it can be done on a Puma, the Gwyn Lewis site states their kit will only work on the 4 bolt steering box, I havent checked my car yet but the pictures looks pre Puma.

cheers.
Pat

Mine is just a new pitman arm, a D1 terrafirma rod kit supplied by Les Richmond and a bracket fabbed to bolt the dampner on. Simplez.

Thanks for that, does the track rod fit also? I like the idea of getting the ends with ther grease nipples. if I can buy an HD kit with both bars from the disco that will fit the defender woth a straight arm that would be great..

I had to get the pitman arm off my old disco. 10 ton press and that thing was maxed out before we got it to pop. And wow did it pop. Not only that it popped out and slammed into my knee.
So lucky to still have said knee.

Sorry a bit off topic but hey it might serve as a warning these buggers are pressed on pretty tight.

Correct, both rods fit

Thanks!
I have ordered:
TF252 Discovery 1 & Range Rover Classic heavy duty steering rods (4 track rod ends. Late)TF811 Discovery 1 & Range Rover Classic steering damper (D1/RRC)

NTC9236 - Straight power steering box pitman arm

I could have changed the damper mount to an eye one but it was half the price of a new damper so will see how I go, hopefullt I have the correct parts [bighmmm]

Cheers
Patrick

That ought to work.

I simply made a new bracket to take the standard defender damper. Bit late now [emoji56]
