So i just started up my 97 land rover discovery one a few minutes ago and started hearing this knocking sound coming from the engine bay just wondering would anyone have any idea as to what it is? Before i parked it up on the weekend the knocking sound wasnt there.

Lazy lifter, lack of oil, exhaust gasket gone, bottom end spun a bearing, wife behind you?

Could be a few things. Check the last one! I have had that happen a few times.

Engine type and other stuff will help. But knock generally is bottom end and tap is top. Hope its neither.

CHECK THE OIL!!

Some time ago and out of the blue my 3.9 V8 petrol generated a loud deep knocking noise one morning on a cold start. I thought big end and immediately switched off. I sent the Rangie into my independent Landy mechanic on a truck. Thanks RACV Total care. Over a couple of days the mechanic couldn't get the car to reproduce the noise but then it did it. Like me he couldn't switch if off quick enough. Also like me he thought a big end problem.

Long story short is that it wasn't an engine problem but a metal sheet inside the bottom of the muffler which had worked loose and the exhaust gases were causing it to flap around and sound just like a crook big end. New muffler and all was well.

I hope your problem is as simple Mark.

Engine ? Pretty vague description.

I'd be starting by covering this bit first!

Tdi or V8?

Auto or manual too?

Had a look at some of the OP's posts and it is a V8i
