Had a breakdown last week in my 300 Tdi Disco with the pulley on my PS pump suddenly separating from the pump and making an inglorious sounding bang as it landed way on the road...120 km from home..ugggh! Fortunately we had only just taken off and pulled up at a T intersection. With car in the middle of the road I recovered one PS pulley from underneath the car and luckily could find no collateral damage to anything else in the engine bay... cooling system, PS hoses/fluid reservoir, timing case etc. Once car safely to side of road found that the shaft on the pump had sheared off approx 20-25 mm back from pulley... shaft still connected to pulley and all bolts inplace. 75% of the cross section at the break area appeared to be discolored so guess it was a long time finally coming..maybe a knock many years ago?, flawed metal?, any opinions.
Got it fixed this week with some helpful service by British Offroad (after a flattop tow to them) but I now think if this had happened on a big trip out west...Holy $%^. I see pulley walks can happen but a shaft break??? Anyone else had this happen and is a spare PS pump in the back a recommendation? Anyway this was the first time that I was totally incapacitated with the old girl to get her home, so I guess not too bad for the years of service.
