View Full Version : Td5 centrifugal filter spin-down noise

Hey all

While doing my first service to the Defender last night I noticed that the centrifugal filter was a little tight to get on to the shaft it sits and spins on. It seemed to spin somewhat more freely when it was right at the bottom and seated properly though.

After swapping the other filter as well and replacing all the oil, I noticed that when I shut down there was no familiar spin-down whine of the filter any more. It was silent.

Should I be worried or is this what I want...i.e. was the noise that the old filter made due to the sintered bronze bearings being worn? Do we replace the filter because of this under normal circumstances (along with the fact that it has collected its fair share of particles from the oil). Do they make noise as they fill up with junk?

I'm just a tad worried that the replacement (from Four Wheel Drives - non genuine) might have bound up on the shaft and might not be spinning at all....

Cheers
Chris

Chris...start again...NOW!

You need to check the filter is not hitting the cap. It is well documented that aftermarket filters are hitting the filter housing cap. It will eventually put a hole in the filter with all the associated metal going somewhere 8O

Also, the cost of a LR filter is only approximately $2 more...why risk it??

Cheers,
Lyndon.

This is interesting, because my car has a spin down noise too, after you have switched the engine off. The cf filter has never been replaced, so i presume it's a LR one 8O 8O

Dang! I suppose that I also have to dump 6 litres of brand new synthetic oil to even check it.... https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

No!!! You only need to check the cap and the top of the filter to see if it is touching.

The filter will hold very little and it sits on the top of the motor. As you pull the filter out just let it drain down the pipe. This just dumps it into the sump.

Cheers,
Lyndon.

Thanks Lyndon. I just picked up a genuine one from Land Rover. Lesson learned.

Chris go to Karcraft to get your genuine filter much cheaper, also it could be that because the oil is new it is a bit thicker and cuts some of the noise down.

Sometimes they are a bugger to get in, just check it to make sure it's spinning and start the engine again to make sure it's not hitting the cover, trust me you'll know, it is load enough to hear clearly.

I thought a semi synthetic was recommended for the TD5, like Penrite HPR 5/40, this is what i use.

Thanks Baz - there is absolutely NO noise, which is what worries me. I suspect that the bronze bearing clearances are too small and it's running tight. I'll know once I remove it this arvo and see if its bound up on the shaft. I'm replacing it either way with the genuine one.

I'll also check out Karkcraft..... where are they?

After replacing mine with a Genuine part I had no filter wind down noise either.

Did you go for a nice drive to spin it up fast?

Mine 'whirred' a while after a decent drive and does it now too...

But if I've been idling prior to stopping the filters already slowed down and hardly makes a sound.

Try taking her for a spin!

Cheers
Mike

OK - I went and bought a genuine Land Rver item from Purnell's.

I've just swapped them and now all is fine - I get it spinning up and you can hear it spin down (albeit a bit more quietly in new oil). No oil went anywhere - thanks Lyndon https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ - and the problem was that the non-genuine rotor's sintered bronze bearings were just ever-so-little too tight. It was not spinning up to revs at all. The genuine artical spins extremely easily by hand, like it should.

The supplier has apologised and will be having it and the rest of the batch checked.

At least no damage done! I guess it pays to know what noises your car usually makes :?

Cheers
Chris
