View Full Version : Server Not Found - connection timed out

Every couple of minutes and my internet seems to drop out - when opening a new page or new web site I get the message Problem Loading Page, Server not found - connection timed out.

The internet icon on the laptop shows I am still connected to my modem (or my phone hotspot) but I cannot use the web.

When I right click on the internet icon you get the options to Troubleshoot problems or Open network connections . If you open network connections it tells me I am connected to the network.

If I go through the Troubleshoot problems it goes through its processes and resets the wifi adaptor and the final message that comes up is "the default gateway is not available" - and then says it is fixed.

The Internet then works for another couple of minutes then stopped with Problem Loading page etc message - I then trouble shoot with the wifi adaptor being reset and all works for a couple of minutes then on and on and on - Ground Hog Day.

Is my Wifi adaptor in the laptop screwed - Lenovo crap only 5 weeks old - or are there other issues?

Thanks

Garry

PS - picking up Gary's point I wonder if it was actually an ISP issue as the problem was through the NBN and also the 4G network.

been my experience that Lenovo are near the top of the pack in the under $1500 price brackets so unless you bought a 'Ron" special it shouldn't be the laptop

what AV you got installed?

Garry, I recently had a very similar problem with internet being very slow and dropping out both on wireless and Ethernet connections. (Using NBN fibre to the premises through NBN box to a NetComm modem.) It turned out to be a problem with the modem firmware which was then updated by my ISP. The modem update fixed the problem.

ICANN is doing DNS encryption updates (over the next few days i believe) and there is some suggestion of down time during this.
I have not experienced any though.

Thanks Dave - is a ThinkPad E580 bought direct from Lenovo Aust not a reseller - it is setup as provided - what is AV?

Thanks for the other responses - cannot be an NBN issue as the same problem also occurs when I turn on the Hotspot on my phone and connect to the internet from the Lenovo via the 4G network.

Interestingly is not playing up today - differences are computer turned off overnight and rebooted this morning - was not feeling well yesterday spent most of the day in bed with the laptop on battery and today is running on power - I wonder if there is a battery saving setting when running on battery that is the issue - haven't spotted anything. Also with the laptop sitting on the doona airflow was restricted and maybe the wifi adaptor was getting hot - though the fan was not running and the laptop was not hot at all.

Later I will switch back to battery and see if I have the issue.

Thanks for the responses

Ok [bigwhistle]- what is the build in free one?

Ok - no issues today on battery or not - now beginning to think it was my ISP playing silly games back at where their servers live. If it was the laptop it would have been playing up today.

Problem is back and now only occurs when running on battery.

When on battery I have to reset the wifi adaptor every few minutes. As it only occurs when on battery is there a power setting that I have not found that turns to wifi adaptor off after a while when on battery as a power saving option.

Though I note on the Lenovo forum there are threads that would seem to indicate that there is a wifi issue with the E580 but it is not clear whether it is software or hardware.

As a result of the issue it is not feasible to use this laptop when on battery to surf the web .

Any ideas? No response on the Lenovo forum.

Thanks

try a usb style wifi adaptor and see if your problem persists

you'll need to turn off the internal adaptor in your network adaptor settings

something like one of these

TL-WN823N | 300Mbps Mini Wireless N USB Adapter | TP-Link Australia (https://www.tp-link.com/au/products/details/cat-11_TL-WN823N.html)

Thanks for that information - I have an older wifi USB stick that I use on an older desktop so I will give that a try.

I found the solution today - it was as I thought, the check box in the wifi adaptor properties dealing with power usage had the turn the wifi adaptor off box to save power box ticked [bigsad]. So when on battery to save power it was switching off the wifi adaptor - this must be a default setting as I have not touched any of these at all.

Thanks for all the suggestions - helped me work through the problem.
