View Full Version : Rear chassis height

I have had the wheels on my restored 88” chassis for a while - and it just doesn’t look right. I’m not sure how much it will settle with a tub on - but currently the top of the rear cross member is 810mm. I completely stripped the springs and put them together again (same parts and same order).
I wonder if someone who has a resto at a similar stage would mind measuring theirs.
Thanks. 145454

To compare apples with apples, what tyre size are you running?

I have same tyres on my 2a shorty..........tub on and hardtop but it did seem high when I was rebuilding will measure tommorow for you with pick
Dunlop SP road grippers have a high profile more than the Continentals on my Puma 90 and 130, l wondered if front tyres would foul on my 2a, they didn't and there is plenty of clearance Are you in Metung? I remember someone doing a 2a from there on this forum
if it's you your welcome to pop over and have a look at mine sometime your not that far away

The reason it looks odd is because the chassis is nowhere level and I can’t see with the engine in the front and the tub on the back it will make a difference.
Thanks for the offer of a visit - I may well take you up.

Pm me and I'll endeavour to be home, I'm in the midst of two 2a resto's at the minute, thought the first would be the last, but the bug bites and they are so much fun to drive

The only thing that will change how it sits is the springs and the weight on the chassis.
Have you overhauled/replaced the springs ? Once loaded up & bounced up & down a few time they might settle down.
The rear spring shackles look almost vertical whereas normally they are angled back when the vehicle is complete (if the springs are past their prime they can angle back much further).

G'day Richard here are some photos your post has got me thinking about my 109 springs

145467 rear of my 88 145469 hanger

145468rear of a 109 rolling chassis I have 145470 hanger

145471rear of 109 military chassis 145472 hanger

145473 145474all the tech info I have on the subject

I'm guessing 109's springs may need resetting I'm thinking split them into their individual components then induce some bend into them using my log splitter and some kind of jig

Thanks Colin and Paul
It was the vertical nature of the shackles that made me wonder in the first place. I have not replaced anything- but have taken the leaves apart, cleaned them and rebuilt them.
The two shackles are equal otherwise I would have thought I could have swapped them about.
Once I know that the height should be I think I will have to reset the springs. What looks like rust in the photo is actually copper grease!
I have also looked at the check strap and see it is now too short!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181026/88a87514b7954756493eae55f534d97a.jpg

I'd wait until the vehicle is complete, you will probably find that there isn't a problem once the additional weight settles the springs.

That sounds like a plan - but it will be more complicated to remove.
I’ll ponder this one each time I walk past!
