Thought I never see an little screw jack again.....I made one of these way back in 87 when I was doing my pre-vocational training at TAFE.
Come to think of it I haven’t seen mine for awhile.

Yeah, my screw jack is a TAFE job too, from about 1983. The other TAFE tool I made was a bush drift, but I can't find that anywhere [bigsad]. I also had a mate of mine help with some welding last year, and when he came around, he brought his TAFE screw jack too, which looked pretty similar to mine.
Cheers,
John

A couple more progress pics ...

All painting done, fuel tanks in, clutch filled and bled, yet to fill and bleed brakes. Working on electrics at the moment, got enough wiring done to hit the starter on Sunday to see if it cranks over and it did !. Hoping that this coming weekend will have the braked bled, then put some fuel in and start it !!

John

Looking great John,
I'm working on electrics at the moment as well , but I reckon you'll be out on the road well before I am.

Thanks guys. The body paint is a bit hit and miss, I used enamel, and how well it sticks depends a lot on the primer (if any), and of course my evolving spray painting skills. The wheels I sprayed with Kill Rust "Classic Cream" without any thinner.
Peter, if you need help with your wiring, let me know. Did you buy a harness ? I'm making mine from individual wires from Autosparks.

John

Thanks for the offer John, we will talk soon about that.
A small update on the electrics install over on my thread.

It runs !!
After two years of not being started, the engine ran on the weekend. See video :
https://youtu.be/NiCf5UmuiBQ
This milestone means my starting / ignition and charging wiring all works fine.
I had some trouble with the fuel pump, it was basically doing nothing, but after I disassembled it and freed up the valves it worked enough, but new one on order.

John

You must of got busy after I left... stinking hot too!

Yeah Peter, the painful part was getting the fuel filler fitted in place so I could get some fuel in the tank. Then I double checked all the electrics just to safe. First attempt to start on Saturday afternoon was a failure with no fuel coming through, so I consulted the neighbourhood petrol head brains trust on Saturday night over a few drinks, and worked out the fuel pump was not too good.
Next : seats and test drive :-)

John

I had some trouble with the fuel pump, it was basically doing nothing, but after I disassembled it and freed up the valves it worked enough, but new one on order.
I had problems with a couple of vehicles where the pumps stopped working.
Suspected a split/perished diaphragm but every time I stripped the pump there was nothing wrong but I eventually twigged that the valves were stuck. Turned out to be old fuel that had turned into 'varnish', ran OK when I fiddled with the pump but when left for a few months the fuel evaporated off and the valves stuck shut.
Flushed the tank, replaced the old fuel and all OK, no repeat as long as the fuel is reasonably fresh.

Thanks Colin, yeah my problem was the valves too, but even after freeing them up the pump still wouldn't fill the filter, it was really just a trickle coming through.
The pump I have looks like it's an after market one as the valves can't be replaced, no valve seal / valve retainer in mine, so I just ordered the new one.

John

Another problem the 'varnish' caused was blocking of the fuel pickup tube. Each time fuel was drawn up it applied another layer of varnish to the inside which eventually almost bocked the dip tube. Only found this when I stripped & de-rusted the fuel tank.
Hope the new pump fixes it for you.

More electrics done - lights, indicators, wipers etc, just need to finish the dash / instruments.

And it runs of course !! Well that's after a new fuel pump. Good confirmation that my ignition and charging wiring is all good.

Mick,
BP sent me a formula, I'll have to see if I can find it. From memory it was a mixture of 3 different solvents just can't remember what they were.....
Found it !
40% Toluene
30% Acetone
30% Methanol

Where would we be without shed walls to write on?[bighmmm]
Where I live is a former agricultural property with a huge shed for Vehicles, Horse stables, Packing etc
Scrawled on the corrugated iron walls in chalk, are details of chemical brews that were used way back then with some not so nice ingredients in most ie. 2-4-5-T for Blackberry eradication, 20oz to 100 gallons of water. etc, reminder dates when the Piston pressure pump leathers were replaced, names, bearings greased & misc other details. Other notes are becoming faded now.
Not quite a history of this place but was well on the way.
It seems one of the problems with 245T was erectile dysfunction but as they all seemed to have large families it didn't appear to bother them.
Sorry to go OT.

I drive mine as often as I can around Bemm, maybe once a fortnight I'll drive to Orbost or Cann River both about 120ks round trip runs like a dream......but it did take me about twelve months of tinkering to get it running sweet and stopping, clutch is not 100% yet but I believe it's slop or ware in linkages not to fussed will probably extend rod....but will be more vigilant next time I've got a car in pieces before rebuild.
You will find you will get more than the defender wave with all manner of cars and motorcycles thumbs upping[bigsmile1] enjoy your ride they are fun to drive and very capable of road[thumbsupbig]
PS fly screens on the vents are a good thing if you haven't already got them

Yep, not quite the same when a Series comes towards you & you are in a powered window vehicle & have to find the window switch & drop the window before you can give a good wave. A wave is not always visible through the windscreen depending on reflections etc.
Series is a quick slide of the glass & away you go.[biggrin]

Cap. No biggy. Mine was simply made with a bit of 2mm Ally sheet. Easy to source & work. Have a photo somewhere of one I made way back.
Johnboylandy may have another suggestion.

Hey Carlos, it's from ebay "charlieccu", it's the 2.5" panel. You can get wider ones as well. It comes blank, and I drilled the two 52mm holes for the 2" gauges and smaller holes for the warning lights.

There's a ciggie lighter, so a USB adapter will have to do :-) There was a ciggie lighter socket in the vehicle when I bought it, so a rather large hole to fill, so I just replaced it with a new one from Jaycar.
