Car needs new shoes and I've just ordered the Pirelli Scorpion ATR replacement .... The All Terrain Plus.
I've read good things, so fingers crossed.
Funny coincidence …. have never seen these in the flesh before. Ordered the tyres yesterday, parked my car to get on the train, and there was a D4 sitting there with the All Terrain Plus fitted....what's the chances .....look good.

I'm convinced that they wont exhibit the adverse characteristics of their predecessor.

Let us know how you go and what the noise levels inside the car are like with your new Pirelli's. I have very cheap n nasty tyres on mine (2nd hand car dealer) that are very quiet but eventually will need to change them.

So am I Graeme …
If they bring the tight, smooth, quiet characteristics of the old ATR to play and fix the water voiding issues on road and do as well if not better in moderate off-road scenarios, I'll be very pleased.
They are a hell of a lot cheaper than they used to be too …. used to cost $500 a corner roughly (unless you had a way of getting around the middle men) ….. now ~$300.
Possibly cheaper options out there … but hey!
I'll let you know how they work out.
Cheers,
Kev.

They were a great A/T for a long time. Know several people who got 80,000+ kms out of them. All they have to do is reproduce what they did 10 years ago.

Great minds think alike!
I've just put 2 on the back, and putting 2 on the front tomorrow.

I had some Scorpion ATRs on my D4 previously, downright dangerous. I actually like the original Wrangler H/Ps and put them back on. Then I found some 17 inch wheels and bought a set of Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs, thinking I would swap back and forth between them as I went away and came back.
I've said this before though - the Duratracs are so good that I have just left them on the car. They are a bit noisier as they have worn, but they are awesome off and on road and are pretty good in the wet.

Yeah, I wouldn't buy the original ATR again …. I'm assuming your 'Downright dangerous' comment was wet weather performance when a little worn?
I almost hit a concrete wall on a highway at ~100 thanks to that trait.
Before they wore though, I thought they were great … firm, solid steering and gripped really well.
New AT Plus is apparently heavier … so hopefully stronger (not that I've ever read reports about them being weak) and a lot chunkier ….
I picked up the car today after they were fitted and they are tight and smooth. If there is an increase in noise it's bugger all, which is surprising, considering the tread blocks are quite large and spaced out …. my 18" LTZs hum a lot above 60.
What is encouraging is the fact that the whole tread block is uniform in depth …. so no blocks for water voiding, unlike the older model.
Time will tell :-)
On the OEM supplied Wranglers …. quiet, smooth and stuck on wet or dry …. kudos! But become puncture prone after 40K and once you drive a firmer tyre, you realise how 'wobbly' they are. Not a bad tyre at all … They aren't cheap though.

Since my unwelcomed experience with the ATRs I've discounted any tyre whose tread pattern didn't have full depth voids right across the tyre, which includes the majority of tyres, hence my favouring the AT+.

I've just fitted the all terrain plus on the D5. See here Tyres for Disco 5 (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l462-discovery-5-a/261015-tyres-disco-5-a-6.html)
Interesting comments on the old ATR in this thread. I have had Scorpion ATRs on my D3 and two D4's and found them a great tyre. Never experienced a loss of grip that I can remember. Having said that I never waited until they were worn out to replacement them (or any other tyre). 50-60k is what I remember getting out of them.

I have had these tyres on my D4 for approx 15,000km and they appear to be wearing okay. They are 265/65/17
I knew I was getting close to replacing the previous set when I had a tyre incident on the highway at 4pm on a Friday afternoon before a long weekend. This forced my hand. The Pirelli's were the only tyre they had available in the size I wanted so I went with them.
So far they have been fairly quiet and comfortable. I have only done some gravel road k's in that time and they seemed okay. No real 4WD tracks to give a viewpoint
My gut feeling is that I liked the D697's that I used on my 18's previously but I don't really have anything to base that on. Really, no complaints.

Yeah Scott, the AT+ are on the LR standard 19s.
I've still got 285/60/18 LTZs at about 60%+ tread on the GOEs.
I contemplated a more road orientated tyre for my daily drive but prefer to have a tyre with a bit of tread and some integral strength because sometimes you find yourself on forestry tracks or dirt roads whilst on day trips etc .... and the occasional gutter jump .... LOL!!! I don't want road noise though. One often comes with the other unfortunately.
I was impressed by the good qualities of the ATR and Graeme got me on to the fact that the AT+ is claiming to still be quiet and smooth but has addressed the flaws....so I went for it.
Drove most of the way to the city today ... the steering is so direct now. :-)

Be good to get an update after awhile. I'll need to replace the original tyres on the 19s at some stage.

These replaced Goodyear Efficientgrips (or some name like that).
They are quieter - (I can hear more wind noise from the roof rack!!!) and definately better steering.
I have not done a front wheel alignment yet as I'm putting new lower control arms on in 10 days so did not waste the money.

Your rims appear to be 18" and if so, did you fit 255/60 or 265/60? 255/60 are XL with a slightly higher load rating than the more generally popular 265/60.

I ended up with 255/60's on the 18" rims.

It's a head scratcher Mark. There have been lots of reports of no issues on the ATRs but I thought mine became skitchy after only about 30% wear...mainly on tight turns. There have also been quite a few reports of scary incidents. Didn't you tell me years ago that you had a bad aquaplane incident at speed whilst towing? Maybe got that confused with another forum member?
My aquaplane was out of the box … it was potentially lethal.
My OEM supplied Wranglers were just about worn to the legal limit when I changed them to the AT+ and yet they stuck on with no issue... even during all the massive downpours we've had in Brissy lately.

Not me. Never towed anything bigger than a Bunnings loan trailer.

I bought a set 5+ years ago for my D2b after the fantastic write ups on the web. On greasy clay roads and tracks in outback NSW, the rear end tried to pass me twice. I wasn't pushing that hard and the tires were near new. Not sure if it was the tires or that I had not locked the centre diff but real scary sliding sideways towards a tree (just missed it) and later turning inside out on a formed road. I locked the centre diff and drove very sedately for the rest of the trip and all was well (it also stopped raining and dried out). They get a good write up but I'll never buy them again.

AT+ was only released late last year I think?
Graeme
9th November 2018, 11:33 AM
Correct and they didn't surface here until earlier this year.
I suspect that mutleyrcp was suggesting that a new tyre might get good reviews/promotions but perhaps too early to properly assess the AT+. However there are now lots of AT+ reviews but perhaps too early to know how the carcase performs in the longer term and in tougher conditions. Mine aren't LT but I think they're likely to be as good as any non-LT, hopefully better.

I guess time will tell Graeme.
I'll have to test a few more times but I'm sure the car is a fraction slower to accelerate ..... which I notice when I have the 285 18s on. I'd attribute that to the extra weight of the bigger tyres, so with the AT+ I'm hoping that's an indication of a more robust carcass.

I have a set of Pirelli Scorpian ATRs on my 2015 Disco, just nudging 70,000 km now - compared to the 45,000 km I got out of the OEMs. Probably, 25,000 of the 70,000 km has been towing a 6.5M boat from Nth Qld to the NT and back several times a year.
The ATRs have been great tyres IMO - very sure footed. I have not seen any of the wet road issues that others have talked about. Have had one blow-out travelling at speed on a fairly stoney gravel road.
I have a set of ATR Plus tyres to go on it now - they look great.

I had the ATR's on my D3 and they never missed a beat, a very good tyre in my opinion. On a trip to Broome towing my off road van I went via the Buchanan Highway and the Gibb River Road and they performed faultlessly. I also had no issues in wet weather.
I am looking to put a set of the ATR plus tyres on my D4 but having searched the forum I cannot find any info (except for a spreadsheet that doesn't open completely) on whether the 255/55R20's will fit without rubbing.

I've got AT+ Pirellis on my D3 and I can today testify that they stop dead straight (along with ABS) when a mobile using dickhead pulled out in front of me today. They only have 100 km on them, but I suspect a mm or 2 was used up in the screeching stop!
All I got was a wave, and a smile as she drove off, with her mobile in her hand.
A report has been sent to the Police, but I don't have a dashcam to support it.

I can only see the 20 inch ATR+ in 275/55R20 on the Pirelli site. The spreadsheet u mention says the 275 will 'rub significantly.
I don't want to do any mods, particularly on the rear air con to fit the larger tyres and was hoping to find 265/50R20, but I don't know if Pirelli make that size [emoji22]
If they don't, I might have to go to the Nitto Terra Grappler G2...

Sorry mate a typo 275/55R20Thought probs. I thought so but was hoping you had some info. I put an inquiry into Pirelli and they called me direct yesterday and advised no other sizes on the agenda and therefore nothing to directly fit a 20" D4 without risk of rubbing

Just drove 900 km down the Bruce Highway from Bowen to Maryborough in torrential rain (courtesy of cylone Owen!). I can only describe the Disco with its legal, but almost ready-for-replacement, Pirelli Scorpian ATRs as very "skittish" where water was flowing across the road. No flooding - just water on the road from the downpour.
I have a set of ATR Plus Scorpians to go on it - they look the goods but it will be interesting to see how they go.
