REAR AXLE LEAK INSIDE WHEEL

Had a great trip to the northern Flinders Ranges recently. The old girl held up beautifully.


On a morning inspection I noticed lubricant spilling down the inside of the rear driver's side tyre (see pic). The lube looked suspiciously like the blue Pentrite EP 85W140 I had filled the diff with prior to the trip (2.5L as per spec).


I wiped it off and it didn't reappear until another 300 kms or so.


I pulled the wheel off but couldn't locate the leak point. Brake fluid remains at capacity.


So what have I got? A busted seal I suspect but which one and is it something I could have a crack at repairing myself?

If you have even a small amount of mechanical knowledge you can fix this yourself Dave. Firstly find out where it is coming from - I would think the hub seal. The oil will be on the inside of the rotor if it is. Get a new one and if you don't know how to fit it get back on here and we can help you.

Thanks Bearman. I've followed the advice of some others below and cleaned out the diff breather first. If the problem persists I'll definitely be back on here to get some help!

Thanks goingbush, I've cleaned out the breather and checked it reinstalled. I could blow into the axle and what I blew in came out again so I think that's a good sign. Will keep an eye on it now. Cheers.
