View Full Version : Where does your compressor live?

I've always thought that under the bonnet isn't a great environment for a compressor. Heat, dust, water, etc.... must kill the unit, if not the filter, very quickly. A lot of people I know tell me that this theory is pure bunk.

Where do you keep yours and why?

Mine is nder the LHS passenger's seat. The coiled-up hose sits next to it. It's plugged in to an Anderson plug I've positioned right next to it. I can disconnect the compressor to run any other appliance I need to from this plug location as well.... like inverters and a 12v low-draw heated blanket (for the dog, who lives inside the car when camping down in the Snowies in -15 degree temperatures. (It's a Pug - and they can't take either the heat or the cold in excessive ranges.)

Mine is there also, but I have mounted it on the angled part of the wheel well. this gets it a bit higher, and there is room for my tent poles under the seat in front of it. Have not hard wired it in yet, as I'm waiting for my cargo barrier to mount a fuse box on or near.

I have an ARB compressor inside my recovery tool box which is hard wired .The box sits between the wheel arches behind the back seat , the switch is on the inside pass rear near tailgate with just the air hose clip exposed out of the toolbox so snap on the hose press the switch and pump away .

Mine's under the back seat drivers side hard wired direct from battery auxiliary fuse box. It's a Blue Tongue, and with 6 metres of airline will reach all 4 vehicle tyres and the camper trailer.

question.

if they are hard wired with a fuse and turned off, will they still draw current? im new to this game, and the thawt of been left with a dead battery in the middle of no where still freaks me out.

cheers.

Hot? Who told you that? :D

Just chuck a leg of lamb in next to your compressor, you'll have dinner in no time!

I had my ARB compressor mounted under the bonnet of my V8 Rangie for about 9 years. It is now mounted behind the cab of the 130 and still going as strong as ever.

Don't forget the engine driven 'air on board' option here... Find an old AC pump, mount it, fit up an air line and flick the switch... :)

Mines mounted on the firewall under the guard to the right of the pedal box.

What models are you fitting it to?

In the D2 I've made up a mount in the LH rear side of the engine bay. A vertical plate as a heat shield and to mount the catch can and breather collection point and the air distribution on, on the outside of this (away from the engine) a flat plate with room for the compressor and other stuff.

Finishing it off on Wed so will get some pics. As for heat, I always thought, from dual battery reports in D2's< that the TD5 got hotter as they killed batteries with the turbo heat.

What about under the passenger seat with a short length of hose plumbed to a fitting on the side of the seat base ?

That's where mine is on the D2:)
The outlet is on a mounted bracket facing rearwards next the mounted switch.
Turning on and coupling the hose is done with the rear door open so it's all dust/mud free on trips:D

where did you mount the switch? im guessing you dont have to pop the hood to turn it on?

Actually I do. But it's only running tyres at the moment and the the hose connects directly to the compressor. It will be plumbed into the sliders which are sealed for storage and run out to an outlet F&R. The winch free spool is run by solenoid control with its own switch with the inside controls plus the controls on the front.
