View Full Version : Travel Buddy Oven - who has one

Just noticed Inc has installed one.....

I’ve been considering one however space is an absolute premium in the rig.......

Travel Buddy Original v Travel Buddy Marine

The marine is wider (taking up valuable space) but had temp control.

Interested in owners thoughts......

I’m leaning towards Travel Buddy Marine

Yep have watched Brett’s vids......

And it looks like enough capacity to cook a meal for two quite easily.

Er hang one which thread am I in.

It’s just the two of us, so just need enough space for a meal for two, small roast and veg, lasagna, rhubarb pie, pizza, bread casserole.

The marine would mean I could put two trays in...maybe meal and desert.

I reckon the marine ones the way to go. I too have watched Brett and his adventures, and I think whilst your moving around, a brilliant idea.
I think an extra bonus in having one is if you can’t have a fire 🔥, various reasons can put you in this situation.
Leeanne says we don’t need one due to having the van ,, but,,, [bigwhistle]

I have an el cheapo $50 clamshell 12v oven I have used in the car and on the boat to heat up pies, pizza and leftovers and its all I really need.
The marine oven looks great but it would take up far too much space especially on my boat and 9 to 10 amps is far too power hungry for me.

I'll probably go for the bigger ''marine'' version space permitting.

I can cook a few dishes on the dormobile grill/ burner, but it would be nice to ''slam in the lamb'' occasionally

I have a $40 dick Smith 12v oven that heats pies and hot dogs quite well but not suitable for cooking.Used to have one in the heavy haulage truck. Could heat pre-cooked meals in about an hour or so, or cook a stew up in about two and a half hours.
Used to load it up in the afternoon (oversize, so we had to stop by dark). Saved heaps over roadhouse tucker. (But I spent all I saved on beer, anyway!)

very happy

pics in the other thread.

I bought a couple of small pie tins at target for $2 each the other day to use in it as well, as I plan to do an apple pie of two :p

I see its called a re-heating oven. So I guess you cant cook a roast from a chunk of raw meat.
It seems to do what we did in the old days . Wrap your pre-cooked meal in foil and tie it to the exhaust manifold [bigsmile1]

Er no...it cooks from raw.....@ 180 degrees it no different to a conventional oven

Tried using engine bay/exhaust when we were bored with varying success......prefer a bit more science these days.

Yep I do too......but when more and more places becoming banning open fires or the areas are stripped of firewood and we simply don’t have room for either of our three camp ovens and I don’t own a Webber q.

I only ever use my camp oven in winter....last thing I want to do in summer is work a fire.

Get yourself a webberQ you will love it and it can be used even on fire ban days[thumbsupbig]
I have a baby webberQ and can still cook a good sized roast in it.and at about 5he same cost as one of these marine ovens they are much more versitile.

We are not driving two cars with caravan and boat in tow.

I have a plethora of room to cart gear when I go bush without the missus and as my boat is pretty much self contained (I even have a dunny on board) I can live on or out of that if I wanted to.
If I can fit the webberQ in I definitely take it but those little gas stoves with the disposable gas canisters are usually all I use most times.
The marine oven would ne nice on the boat but space is an issue as is the power needed to run it as my outboard only puts out 40amps.
I only run my little 12v pie warmer when the engine is running so that I dont deplete the batteries.

I've been looking at these for the last couple of months. I will be buying the bigger marine version shortly and mounting it permanently in the back of my 130.

I've watched Brett's review on it and that sold me.

Ebay seems to be the place to get them with prices starting from $279 with free delivery. There was one on Gumtree last week for $150 but I missed that one.

So when you make a pie does the pastry come out crisp and brown or is it like reheating in a microwave and come out soggy.

Apologies for slow reply. 100% get one. I have the Marine One which is the way to go. I have experimented over the last few weeks. I have cooked a roast to perfection. Was really juicy and not overdone. I had it on around 160 degrees for a few hours. It was a 1kg roast.

I have since bought Trays from a thread on face book. I can find the link if someone is interested.

On the weekend around 11 O'clock on a perfect Sunday to wash the car. I thought.... oven.. So i put in some party pies on the tray set it going for an hour while i washed the car.. They were delicious.

I highly recommend them. Great for putting in pies driving to your destination and pulling up to the envy of your mates when you pull out a nice hot pie..

Next experiment for me is roast veges....... So love roast potatoes.

The only problem I had was that the door came open on a rough road. I have since made a spring clip to keep it closed. Heating great, roasts cooked but not crisp and an unsuccessful damper[emoji20] possibly because I did not start with a preheated oven.

Great oven we **** canned our mate when he bought one but now we all have them. Great for reheating meals or doing pies and sasuages rolls. They even do a mean roast or baked potatoes.

And FYI I'm the bloke who makes the oven trays have sold over 200 and recently did a small run for a 4wd shop. Marine oven is the only way to go. I also found door can come open easily on rough track i have a strap i just put around mine to hold it shut.

Nothing beats a camp oven or webber. But travel buddy certainly adds a level of convenience when you can knock something up for lunch or get a roast going 3 or 4 hours before you reach camp.

We did that on our tassie adventure wrapped up some spuds in tinfoil threw them in oven and couple hours later perfect baked potates.

Like Lee said replace the cig plug mates came out partially and melted the cable and plug. We have all since switched them to anderson plugs or hardwired them.

So after some head scratching I found a suitable location in the back of the 130 and fabbed up a bracket.

I have wired the oven direct to my auxiliary batteries via a 15 amp fuse. Works a treat.

Will get a workout next week when I head bush for a week with my 2 sons and the dirt bikes.

In the meantime been away since chrissy, decided to do a roast on way home from Lakes entrance 3.25 hours later ive got a delicious if well done done roast lamb and left over veggies bit of gravox and its a very tasty meal

The defer is booked for its new fit out next week, travel buddy oven will be facing a different way which means some upgrades are in order.

Latch, never had the door self open when it was facing to the rear, it’ll now be facing the passenger side into the hall way 3’ off the floor. Just to be on the safe side we need a latch.

Insulated door, again haven’t needed it for the performance of the oven, and wasn’t really an issue coming into contact with the door, as above we will now be interacting with the door as it’s flush with the cupboards facing the hall way. Door does get very hot.

Trivet, finally bowed to pressure, it’ll get the oven bags off the tray and when required separate the juices from the food.

Anti-rattle tray, wasn’t sure if the trivet would fit my tray, added it to the order as well, one less rattle in the defer....

Voltage booster, addd to the order as it was cheapest enough. While we don’t use he travel buddy often while parked up it seems it will assist with maintaining a higher temp.

Awesome service, ordered last weekend, arrived Wednesday. I like supporting Aussie businesses.
Australian Made Stainless Steel Oven Trays for Travel Buddy ovens (https://somervillemetalworks.com.au/)

Better get cracking on the upgrades so the fitout team can install.
