Hi,
Just wondering if anyone could recommend an auto electrician in the Morley area of Perth.
I have a 2003 TD5 auto Disco 2 that is driving me a bit mad.
When the car gets up to temperature, the M&S warning lights start flashing and the car dumps into limp-home mode.
We acquired the car three years ago and the fault only occurred sporadically in wet weather. I serviced the car and changed the fluid and filters in the gearbox as per the YouTube video from the guys at Atlantic British. The problem went away and we went the whole summer without a hitch. I wasn't specifically aiming to sorting that problem out, but a few posts had suggested dirty trans fluid may be the culprit. The gearbox was transformed, smooth, shifting nicely and generally livening the drive up no end.
I used to think it was wet weather that set it off used to set it off, but of late the problem appears to occur when the engine is up to normal operating temperatures and then it goes bonkers.
There is also a strange going on with the revs and engine temp sensor. The Disco's fluid levels are fine, with new hoses and a complete fluid change recently. I even managed to get rid of the 'waterfall' phenomena from behind the dash and get the heater working again! But, I can turn the car on and there will be no signal to the temp gauge, only the red warning light coming on. In conjunction with this, the engine revs sit about 250rpm above the normal ~750rm idle. If I stop the car, reset it by activating and deactivating the immobiliser/alarm/central locking, both problems generally go away.
I did some searching on the forum and it appears the two may be linked, in that the engine temp signal is shared by the gearbox ecu and if it doesn't tally, it kicks into limp-home mode rather than locking up the torque converter.
So I've spent a considerable amount of time, pulling plugs, cleaning them, but to be honest, all pins, socket and earth points look in very good condition.
I'm wondering if there is a signal issue to the gearbox ecu regarding temps, whether the battery is on its way out and the temp signal issue is voltage driven. Or, whether the Disco is a POS and deserves a fiery end...
Regardless, I need a new battery for my defender, so I might try it out on the Disco first and then if that doesn't solve the issue, call for the skills of a Land Rover-centric auto sparky.
Thanks in advance for any comments/recommendations.
