I'm glad to see Land-rover has entered the lexicon for 4WD, like "hoovering" for vacuum cleaning and "xeroxing" for copying. Although I see on the "Death In Paradise" TV series they refer to their Defender as a "jeep". Not sure if that is a Caribbean thing as it is filmed on Guadalupe.

Nope, I hear it regularly on British TV programmes, even Midsomer Murders!

Like the examples above for vacuum which is called a hoover in the U.K. all 4x4 are genetically referred to as a Jeep. Strange in the land of the Land Rover

"Jeep" is of course shorthand for G.P. or "general purpose", the original specification for a wartime light 4WD, so it kinda makes sense. The brand name came later.

And Tannoy for a public address system (Tannoy is a UK brand).
But we do the same here but not nearly to the same degree. I hear "Gerni" a lot for high pressure water cleaners.

Originally there were 3 manufacturers, not just Willy's but Ford & Bantam, arguably Bantam were the inventor of the Jeep, but couldn't produce the numbers as they were a small company.

Then there's Primus (pressure stoves), Biro (ball point pens) and Thermos (vacuum flasks) that have become generic.
