Ok,so whats the guff on this.

The guy up the road said his house shook that night and he heard the noise, went for a drive and couldn't see anything.

We could walk to the accident from our place.

That bridge is a bit dangerous at high speed,as it has a gradual curve.

There have been a few other incidents on it with trucks, but they have been going the other way.

I hope the poor truck driver didn't lie there for hours.

Looking at the crash site, and the wreckage,it may have been instant.[bigsad]

Not nice.

Did he somehow manage to go over that concrete barrier without doing major damage to it?

In the video the cab doesnt look too crushed(?). The forces and risk of say head injury would seem to have been significant.

There are dozens of reasons how or why the tragedy happened, but the burning question is why didn't Lindsay Brothers notice the truck missing? LBs specialise in time sensitive, produce. All their vehicles would be fitted with MT data, or similar, that monitors the trucks' speed and position.
Condolences to the driver's young family.

Yes, it looks from the tyre marks, and damage to the barrier, but i am not the expert, that it went over the concrete barrier, which isn't very high.
The tyre marks start in the left lane.

A very sad situation, and condolences to the family,as Ian has said.

Those concrete barriers and Armco railings may keep cars on the road, but often turn a minor issue, for motorcycles or trucks, into a major or fatal event.

A very sad situation, and condolences to the family,as Ian has said.If the tyre marks start in the left lane, my first thought is that maybe a brake lost air pressure and locked up, and things went bad from there.

Agree it’s strange the LB didn’t know the truck had come to a stop.....but I’m also guessing the monitoring systems have glitch’s from time to time.

Lindsay Bros in an interview said the truck wasn't due for several hours so the driver must have made time somewhere.

A lot of operators have an idle time alarm and check in with the driver.....I guess the truck wasn’t idling in this case

Back in the 70's & 80's Lindsay Bros had an appalling accident record. This produced an industry joke -

Unless a truck has a drivecam i would think most companies wouldnt have picked up on it missing unless it failed to meet a critical deadline.

I'd be most surprised if El Bees don't have a multitude of cameras, including a fatigue monitor.
It took my mob less than an hour, last week, to contact me when I inadvertently obscured the camera.

So you cover it when you are somewhere you shouldn't be..[tonguewink]

The truck in question was apparently only 6 months old,so no doubt it would have the latest tracking and monitoring systems, you would think.

Did it happen at night? Would it be fully monitored real time at night?

With a 19:30 departure the truck either would have been unloaded in the early hours of the morning (Unlikely), camp somewhere for a few hours till depot opened up or had to sit in a queue.
Some places with lots of traffic have queues to negotiate, every 5 minutes or less they have to move the truck in a line till they get to be loaded or unloaded. Instead of having a parking area where drivers could sleep till their turn to be unloaded.

a follow on from Ian camera alert...

one of our carriers when exiting our site need to negotiate a narrow piece of equipment....some of the drivers choose to stick their head out the window to check the position of the tyre in relation to the equipment. the sets of off the distracted driver alarm.

I believe they put a zone around the area to stop the alarms however given they need to cross a railway line that's doesn't have boom gates or even flashing light they are hesitant as they need to capture the data for the railway crossing.

I recently used a vehicle that had an alarm if your eyes got sleepy. Problem is it shines a bright red light at your eyes, which i found a distraction at night. I accidentally chucked a cap over it, and never heard a word about it, thankfully.

Our cameras will alarm when stationary at an intersection, looking at the traffic from either side and when looking in the mirror while reversing.
