Gday All,

getting a failed rear wheel bearing done on the D3 on Monday by Justin Cooper but due to the short notice , time arrival of the parts into Tassie on Monday ,and us booked to depart on the ferry on tuesday we can only do the 1 side .

with my close relationship with old Mate Murphy I am looking at prolly doing the other rear before driving back home to Darwin.

Can anyone recommend a place that could do a rear wheel bearing in either west of Melb or Adelaide area ? Plan was to drive the G.O.R to SA then cut up to Pt Augusta . I know of TRS in Lonsdale but anyone else got any suggestions.

Thanks and Cheers Ean

If you are driving the GOR, there is a Land Rover dealership in Millicent, SA (not far past Mount Gambier).

I found them very helpful once when we were returning from Tassie to Kalgoorlie, and I have only ever heard good reports about them.

Ean, depending which way your taking off exactly out of Melbourne, there’s a dealership not far from the boat 🚤 , or, if you have the time/opportunity etc, there are a couple of independents in and around Melb too.

gday Chops,

i have the camper in tow so was looking at prolly setting up in a van park somewhere and dropping the car off , hence my thoughts of outside Melb or on my way to SA then home .

happy to look at all option tho.

Theres a nice place about 10 minutes from me and a couple of independents 15 minutes the other way.

Im greensborough way. And if you need it can arrange for you to have my spare D1 before I start stripping it down.

thanks for the kind offer Dave . I will google and see where you are . Can you tell me the names of the indies so I can forward book if that's the way we go . Not sure how many would have a rear wheel bearing for a D3 sitting on the shelf .

There's a "Big4" caravan park at 265 Elizabeth St Coburg, just 9 kms North of the city, my mum & dad used to go there when in town - it's pretty nice, you can call them on 03 9353 8222.
Could give you a base while getting work done....

cheers

I'd agree with this. Peter has always done the right thing by us even when contacted from remote locations when we wanted advice on mechanical issues. A very approachable bloke who knows his stuff. He is however pretty busy most of the time so it would be worth contacting him as soon as possible to try and arrange a time.

all the best

Les Richmond Automotive (http://www.lrautomotive.com.au/).

The other one isnt a landy specialist persay but does good work at reasonable prices.

Theres also the option of I can see if I can get you on the block if you bring your parts with you we can field strip the wheel assembly and I can run it into work to press it over during my lunch break and after knock off refit it and have you on your way.

Thanks everyone for the info and a big thanks to Blknight.aus (Dave ) for your kind offer .

i will get the car to a Justin tomorrow and see what he finds then make the call . It's my diagnosis of a failed bearing not his so will let him wave his magic wand and see where we are at .

i think the Land Rover brand doesn't realise how lucky it is to have a forum like this . never ceases to amaze me the amount of help offered to / from people whom have never met . I could see many walk away if you were relying on the dealer network alone .

thanks again

Cheers Ean

Update - drivers side rear wheel bearing total failure which Justin is doing today . Passenger side is getting done at AMV on Thursday . They were the only people of the few I rang whom could fit it in at short notice .

i did check them for movement/play just before leaving Darwin and must admit it was the last thing I expected but seeing the size of the double row bearing I think it would have to be pretty bad to pick any movement in it just sitting on a jack the way I checked it .
The car got us 100ks after it basically let go , to a decent place to set up camp , then to Justin's workshop . Atleast we weren't left stranded somewhere so very happy with that .

The passengerside replacement is more so I know they have both been done , although there is some play starting to show . Plus it saves me doing the job at home .

thanks to all for the advice and blknight for his offer of help.

Cheers Ean

Making a B line for the border Ean ?

i am supposed to be back at work Monday but that ain't going to happen. We plan to drive the G.O.R then head for pt Augusta then home.

if they finish the passenger side by lunchtime as they had said we will meander off towards Geelong and see how far we get .

Cheers Ean
