View Full Version : Navigation update on imported Discovery 4? D4??

Hi all,

I know I am not the first to have this issue, but i cannot see a solution posted on any forums.

I have imported our Discovery 4 from the UK to Australia. Everything works fine except for the navigation which has Europe maps loaded. Land Rover tell me that the only solution they can offer me is to sell me a new entertainment unit at $4999 (:censored:). Ive see a bunch of other people hit with the same issue on other forums - does anyone here know the solution?

I have bought the Australia 22 maps from Landrover (that was before the new unit quote!), and the GPS obviously works fine as you can see the car changing direction on the map, i just need the maps to appear underneath! It cant be that complicated surely?

Really grateful for any advice on this as I'm drawing a blank, and being new to Perth could really do with this working!!

Thanks

I rely on google maps most of the time and felt it better than my discovery GPS. May be I am wrong.

I use my Tom Tom on rental cars in the USA Just suction cup it onto the infotainment screen. I find it is more up to date than the OEM unit. My niece has an un-named Jappy car and the dealer wanted more for an update to the GPS than she could buy a Tom Tom for with lifetime updates included.

I will suggest looking on the disco3 UK forum as surely someone has had the same issue with changing from UK map to continental and vice versa.

I suspect, like all GPS items, your unit will be coded to the Northern Hemisphere. This is the same security/regional code types used in DVD et al. If I am correct then you will need to replace the unit. The antenna, software and firmware will be coded to look for signals within the European Zone

Or as others have said just spend a couple of hundred bucks and get a Garmin or the like with a built in traffic camera and save some money

I will be very interested to see how this pans out, I bought a head unit from UK to replace mine which has decided to not select AM/FM radio but have not got around to installing it yet. I intended to do exactly what you are trying and have had a conversation with cambo a while ago about this, he seemed to think it should be OK. I have also searched DISCO3 and other forums and have not been able to find anything specific other than this, DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - Swapping out Australian sat-nav for a UK version (https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/swapping-australian-sat-nav-uk-version-147426.html?highlight=sat%2A+nav%2A+Australia) which is not much help. I did try to contact crimdog81 but to no avail. I have also considered getting an Aust spec head unit from a local wrecker, $750 [bigsad] PM me if you want further details. I presume that if you bought a local head unit you could still use your Aust 22 maps to update it.

I'd be surprised if you couldn't activate this through the Car Configuration File. You will need either an ID Tool or Nanocom Evo. I've just looked at my CCF:
146373146374146375146376
Ignore as built percentages, it just tells you the percentage of cars built with that feature.

There may well be other settings you need to adjust.

The CCF editing function is a handy tool (but could get you into a world of pain if you stuff things up!)

I've disabled the three flash turn signalling function (just couldn't get used to it); shortened the interior light delay from 60 to 30 seconds, and; removed the leading 0 from the odometer display. Nothing earth shattering, but handy to do.

Hi all, thanks for all the replies so far. I’m still researching and can’t believe there isn’t a way around this. I’m getting concerned that it is a big issue though as I just read somewhere that the maps are from different providers in Aus and Europe. Why they would do this is beyond me!
Any more thoughts greatly appreciated, and will let you know how I get on. $750 sounds a lot better than the 5k LR quoted me! But are the systems VIN specific? I think I’ll have to get that bit looked at even if I do a second hand unit?

I’ve no idea why you’re bothering. It’s awful sat nav and it will be horrendously out of date. Google maps on the smartphone. You can even tell it to present the Bluetooth audio on the call stream so it will interrupt the radio just like phone calls can. Magic (ish).

Pretty much why they do these things is down to development dollars. The budgets for development of features into a specific market is the main driving factor and there would unlikely be a development engineer in any car company in the world who would consider this type of problem in the sign off (acceptance) criteria.
As to being VIN dependant, I can't say for sure but I highly doubt it. It would have the unit serial number recorded against the VIN as part of the BOM but that's it I would think.
Sorry I am not further down the road to replacing mine as I am sure that something of use would be revealed.

Seriously, don't bother. I decided to get a Garmin earlier this year because the whole thing was so much better than the LR in dash version. Had the car since new from 2013 and to update the satnav would cost $200 roughly for a dvd that held data which was so out of date it wasn't funny. I sit the Garmin attached to the windscreen so it is just touching the dashboard slightly to the left of the speedo/tacho binnacle. It's closer to my line of sight without being intrusive and is up to date all of the time with more features than the LR one. I understand an in dash system may be nice but the trade off is too great.

He is a friend of mine and no longer has the imported D4. He gave up on getting Aus. Maps, research indicated not feasible for MY10/11.

HEMA unit would be my choice, has both off and on road maps, for similar costs to a second hand AU head unit. I don't have the factory nav in my SD and dont miss it. A friend has a HSE with au sat nav and its clunky to use.

Yeah, mine's an HSE too and whilst it does the job I find the Garmin far superior.

Hi Diesel LSE, this looks exactly what I need? Does anyone know anyone in Perth that might be able to assist with this?

I bought the Garmin DriveSmart 61 LMT-S. Main reason was functionality and a good size screen which I can glance at and read easily when I want to (about 7" from memory) and excellent reviews. Cost a bit but I am very happy with it.

Certainly looks the goods. Probably would have opted for that if it was around when I bought mine. Having the HEMA maps installed would be a handy feature.

My 494 rrs autobiography joined me from uk this week. I guess I will have to give up on configuring satnav to Australia and go for a garmin. Any ideas on setting up the tv? Can’t get the thing to pick up Aussie channels [bigsad]

Hi there, yes I managed to get this and the DAB working. You just need to go through the settings and change location to Australia, if I recall it automatically know the signal mode. You need to ‘search’ channels though the first time you use it. Mines all sorted now save for the sat nav. And I know everyone reckons I should get a Garmin, but I’m not going to. I can’t stand the wires or crap hanging off my windscreen. So I’ll find a way to get the maps on the original screen.

Everything is personal preference. Doesn't matter what we think, you're the one driving your car. Hope you get it sorted.[bigsmile1]

If you can get Apple Carplay or Android Auto to work, there's a stack of mapping software you can use.
