I did mine in the mid 1980's . Cut 10" out of RRC chassis & mounted '64 2A on it .

Probably the first one ever done. Photo taken on the way home from Cooma 40th , 1988

Wasn't there a pommy bloke that made a TV series doing it - something like 'how to make a 4x4'?

Gday Harry and Carolyn, as you might recall I’m looking at doing something similar, pairing a 1992 Defender body/compliance plate with perentie chassis/motor/gearbox.

This is a match made in JLR heaven in that a 1992 body & electively is not too far different from non military aspects of a perentie. In some respects better and more like a 1990s perentie refit.

But what are the pitfalls for registering in Qld? The compliance plate for the perentie was lost before I bought it.

Both vehicles have been previously registered, and not currently stolen or written off.

Thanks.

One with a 300tdi auto would be a cracker.

The obvious issues are the change in wheelbase and axle positions, but these are easily dealt with. The major issue will be legal - the chassis is legally the vehicle, and the resulting hybrid must comply with the ADRs for the date of the chassis. This makes it a lot easier to start with a contemporary chassis, probably RRC. But it would be a good move to explore the legal situation before spending too much!

(I suspect enforcement has got a lot stricter over time, so just because someone got away with something in the past does not mean you will today!)

...funny , isn't it? I think the disco body on the disco chassis is next to perfect. So practical and so comfortable.

Are there any issues with the airbags and crash standards? Defenders would not match the standards for a Disco, I assume. Is that right?

Airbags ( and ABS ) were options on D1s. Quite common yes, but not all have them fitted.

How about crash standards? Can't imagine a Defender matching D1 crash protection.

Hi Paul,

This is actually mine that Harry and I are building up. The plan is for a road registered toy [emoji16].

If you look at the NCOP the code this will be built under is LH5 which is an unmodified chassis and drivetrain with a body from another vehicle added. The rules are that the chassis has to comply with its ADRs and the body has to comply with its.

I haven't posted anything about it yet since we are just about to have the first visit from the engineer to make sure it is going to be acceptable.

Once that is done and dusted I will post up some photos.

This is actually a 300tdi and the body is going to be an extend cab tray back ute, about 300mm added to a single cab defender.

Should be interesting [emoji41].

Cheers,

Tim.
