A wrangler that can carry more than a purse.

This looks the goods from my perspective as it seems to overcome two of the previous Jeep shortcomings in payload and towing capacity, so if it can provide the two engine options-- I would go for the 3ltr auto diesel, and be happy towing my van etc.

I am sorry to say but as a multi Defender owner I think this keeps alive my idea of a 4wd for touring etc much more than what LR may/may not do with its new Defender--again Jeep have got safety features, performance, choice of auto or manual and we know that there are heaps of add on extras for Jeeps already and something that the new LR's seem to lack for the adventure/working market---character!!! I wonder what ANCAP rating it will have in respect of it being an option for the mining industry.

Refreshing to see a new Live Axle 4x4 DC Ute to fill the Defender Void . No Doubt Jeep had the vacant market gap in mind.
Jeep are talking a PHEV (Hybrid ) Version , I'll only be interested if theres a 100% Electric model. No more ICE for me.

Yes, for a quoted $US65,000 that will be a dead set winner.

I'm pretty much 100% certain that nobody at Jeep has ever thought the Defender to be competition to the Wrangler. They make 10 times more Wranglers than Land Rover ever made Defenders. It was not even a flea worth swatting. 90% of Wranglers are sold in the USA, where the Defender has not had a presence and it would not ever be possible for Land Rover to sell a ute.

Was watching a YouTube interview with the Gladiators designer.
Impressive towing capacity @ 3500kg but can only carry a bit over 700kg payload in the tub, so not really comparable to a 130.
Much beefier chassis than the Wrangler and supposedly a redesigned rear suspension.
137" wheelbase may be a little unwieldy, that's 10" longer than a 130 (or BT50 and Ranger) although the short vid I saw it looked like it had a much better steering lock than any Deefer.
Ramp over angle will be an issue, even with the stock 33" tyres but if it is fairly smooth underneath you can skid over stuff as owners of 1980's IH Scouts learnt to do.

Dana 44's front and rear, which is comparable to my original J3000 Gladiator which had a 44 in the front and a 60 out back but it was a 'proper' working truck being comparable to an F250 or Chevy K20

The figures that bloke quotes for the Rivian make it a game changer, at least for me. If all that turns out to be true, then this is the moment I can see me going fully EV. Up to now I've considered keeping the Defender for the long-distance stuff. Irealise there won't be chargers in the scrub for a long time, but following roads rather than tracks, and going town to town anywhere in Australia starts getting very close.
Don.

And best of all, it looks like the Rivian R1S comes in green [tonguewink] , a colour now mostly absent from the LR palette.

This is probably a good reason Land Rover has drastically modernised the new Defender:

It only did poorly on pedestrian safety. Nobody buying a Wrangler could care less about that. That is what people who buy Volvos care about.

The major issue with the Rivian seems to be that it is perhaps best described as "vapourware"!

A real life assessment can only be made when actual vehicles appear - and then really only when the press can actually drive examples.

Worth remembering that the motor industry has a long history of trumpeting vehicles that don't really exist.

A couple of examples - when the first Landrover was unveiled in Amsterdam in 1948, the examples on show were significantly different in several major respects from the production model months later. And there were many changes made in the first year of production.

Or in 1912 when the first Morris car was unveiled at a motor show, it was a static exhibit - with the engine carved from painted wood, with real accessories bolted on.

Given how many are just urban assault vehicles, I would challenge that as a general comment. It won't matter to enthusiasts (in fact it may be a badge of honour - "look how hard I am"), but many urbanites will be scared off. Won't matter too much overall though. They are the ones bought on appearance and then onsold within a year as they realise they have so many compromises just not worth the image for the discomfort. Happened a bit with D90s also. Bought as they are just so cool, but living with that became a drag...

Quite a bit more than that:

"
According to crash data from Euro NCAP, the new Wrangler’s low adult occupant (50 per cent) and vulnerable road user (49 per cent) protection led to the result. The lack of technologies like AEB and curtain airbags make for a very low 32 per cent assist systems score."

"In the official Euro NCAP assessment structural issues were identified: "The connection between the A-pillar and the trans-facia beam was damaged in a way that indicated the structure would be unable to withstand higher loads. Similarly, deformation of the footwell showed that the structure had reached the limit of its integrity." according to the technical data from the report."

Pretty bad for a ground-up redesign.
