Valve sizes Holden Red 179

I am looking to replace some bent valves on the 179. Old valves marked (inlet)Dufor v171003 and (exhaust)k1711003. Repco say the 003 = 3000 of an inch larger than standard? They cant get the larger size, only the standard ones. Question is , does anybody know where I can get the larger ones and what difference would 3000 of an inch make? Repco couldnt offer an explanation.

3 thou (ie. 3/1000") is less than 0.08mm. Not talking much. Oversize is just a way of tightening up the clearances on the stem to guide. If the valves are bent the guides might (?) be damaged also. Which may need a ream and next size up again? Or K-line any affected guides and get std-size stem valves for it? Many options.

Thanks for this. So we are talking about the stem - when I asked where the differnce was I was told in the “trumpet” part. The guides are integral to the head , not sleeved.

Take the head to a reco shop and have bronze thinwall sleeves installed in the guides and go to standard valves. If you have some bent valves you are going to need replacements for them. Might as well do the lot whilst you are at it.

Just get the head reconditioned by a reputable engine reconditioner. In the old days repco and others would "hone" out the valve guides on holden heads and fit oversized stem valves. A cheaper way to recondition a holden head. Best way is to machine the guides and fit bronze valve guides and then new standard valves. Valves for all common engines are cheap as these days. Also fit hardened exhaust valves and seats to stop valve recession caused by unleaded fuel or LPG.

You can also get the tops of the valve guides machined so that they take the mushroom type valve seal caps.
This can be done with the valve guides in situ.
