View Full Version : Fuel water sensor started leaking

Just thought I'd pass this on. Noticed today that I was getting drips of diesel coming from the front of the fuel tank area underneath vehicle. Rang Land Rover place in town. "Come straight in", they said.

Found it was the water sensor that screws into the fuel filter. Guys said it quite often gets a small crack or starts leaking. They pulled it off and temporarily replaced sensor with a bung to stop leaking. New sensor ordered.

First off, happy that they saw me straight away and dealt with leak. Secondly, have others experienced this? The service guys indicated this happens a bit.

Pretty common problem with other vehicles,as many D2 owners have found out,and Tojo 70 series.

But no,not a common problem with the D4.

Yes happens a bit when the sensor is tightened more than hand tight plus a little - cracks and drips. I keep the plug that comes with filters in my tool kit.

Just be aware that the Landrover price for just the sensor is more than a fuel filter kit - the fuel filter kit includes the filter, the sensor and the mounting housing and cheaper than just the sensor by itself. Genuine Sensor is about $253 where the kit is about $10 cheaper.

Mad hey. Two years later since the last time my filter was flagging water in the diesel (none found) I have a complete filter kit to fit (ordered but the error went so didn’t fix). That’s my Christmas task.

Yes, hand tight only. I drained about 20ml out of the bottom of the filter on a trip to Karijini NP. Replaced the fuel filter when we got home with an aftermarket unit from Rimmer Bros.
