View Full Version : Wheels on the horizon

Well then, happen to be in the local tyre place yesterday and after a lengthy to and fro about H/T tyres for my 20" (which was not resolved) the sales guy (Sam) tells me that they are working with ROH to get a 18" wheel for D4 to market. He then showed me an example wheel and said that it was a 18"x9" with a 30mm offset, load rated at 1025kg (because it is a multihole version that fits LR and Jeep) and he had fitted it to a late model SD and it cleared the front calipers. He also said that they were talking to ROH about a single fit rim (for D4) which would have an increased load rating (perhaps 1250) and would use standard LR wheel nuts, and some slight styling changes. Price around $310.

I did do a bit of searching with no result so if this is old news, just let it slide.

That's pretty wide and also has a lot of offset change (not legal fitment on any D3/4/RRS). Are you sure that's not for a D5? I'm not sure the tyre would clear the bodywork with those... unless you went narrow and not too tall. 285/60s on 8" rims at 44 offset are getting pretty darn tight.

OK, so I contacted the tyre retailer yesterday, he confirmed that the offset was +30 and that he had fitted them to a D4 and they were OK. He also told me that he had been incontact with ROH again and confirmed that they will manufacture a single fit wheel. As I understand it my original 20" wheels has an offset of +47mm whereas the 19" are +53m, so at +30 it moves the wheel inboard so if there is a tyre clearance issue it will be with the inner wheel house. I am still contemplating a new set of road tyres for the 20" when I see him next I will ask about inner wheel house clearance and if I get the new tyres will get him to put the 18" wheel/tyre on my car to have a look as he has already made the offer.
I have compomotives already so not interested myself, just putting the info up here for others to assess.

Plus 30mm means less offset compared to the other 2.

A positive offset means the wheel is inset relative to the hub mounting (ie. more wheel inboard than outboard). So a lower positive number means you are pushing the wheel outboard (track increase, closer to outer bodywork, further from suspension, etc). AFAIK the wheel offset change needs to be less than 1/2" (12.5mm in the regs) to be legal. 25mm track increase is max. Therefore I fear these wheels wouldn't be legal fitment. The Compos and TuffAnts are OK.

Whil PCD, Offset and bore all look OK, I think you might have an issue with their load rating. you'll need to research that first. I can't remember the rating for the disco rims, I think it's in excess of 900 Kgs (925?).

Those wheels have a weight rating of 800 kg against the question becomes is 900 necessary or overkill?

800kg and 900kg is too light - the weight rating of OEM D3/D4 wheels is 940kg so 800kg is just too light.

Perfect. Almost identical to compomotive. 4WD1 sell at $550 a piece and are specific for D4 They are made to replace the 19”. Gives you heaps of tyre options. You wouldn’t you be getting these to stay in the bitumen so coupled with the BF Goodrich KO2 LT 265/65 or LT 265/60 if you want get the spare underneath easily is pretty solid. Cheers

So what I said to Sam (the tyre retailer that I have been talking to) is that if there was interest from members about the wheels that I would go back and see him and get him to join the forum as a vendor, unless simply posting his contact details is OK, which I am sure someone will advise me about the rules on that [bighmmm] or what the preferred process is.

Sam called and updated the price, $550 incl GST so right in the same ball park as compomotives, and just to be absolutely clear I have no financial interest or association with this in any way, he is just my local tyre dealer who I started talking to about some 20" tyres, which I have decided not to buy, I am just going to wear out the D697's.

$550 seems to be the RRP for the Moab 18” rims Land Rover Discovery D4 18" MOAB Wheels (https://4wd1.com/moab-discovery-d4-wheels.html)

I haven’t been able to find them on the Les Richmond website though.
