I'm putting together a kit to carry in my Series vehicles and looking for a Coleman single burner stove for those days when you can't light a campfire.

Seems you can get them for about $100 new.

They are great stoves.
I have two and been using them for 20 years now and never have let me down.

I have a similar Coleman stove. I need a new knob for mine but Coleman in Oz don't support them any more. I've tried in the USA from other suppliers (and Coleman) but the part is not available. So mine doesn't get used except in an emergency when camping.

So be aware that spares may not be readily available.

146438You might be able to match up the knob at Jaycar outlets. They have lots of different styles of knobs, not just the knobs behind the counter like my local store has🤣🤣

I bought one new in 2001. I had it for about two years before it got stolen from within my locked car. I then bought a similar ex-army stove. The Colman version is better, as it can hold a larger pot.

I have a three burner Coleman which is now 41 years old, never failed me, and never needed a part. Great product.

Probably not helpful, but I just bought a new one from Snowys online - delivered for under $93. That's not bad...

My FIL has a couple that have been all over Oz for decades and had the hardest life imaginable. Still going strong. Impressive.

I found Snowy's and another, Tentworld (with a shop in Ferntree Gulley), both at $93.
If I can't turn up a secondhand one I'll have to buy new.....

I have a two burner and I had problems running on unleaded, the generator clogged up.
Run on Shellite since without issue, must be all the additives in unleaded fuel ?!

they run fine on 91 octane but choke up on anything else, esp 98 octane

i run my two burner unit on shellite these days as it does burn that little bit cleaner than 91 which is what i used to use for years.

I don't know if it would fit, it's a completely different style of knob.

Mine caught fire around the valve and melted the knob. Not uncommon for the Peak 1 stove it appears.

Is yours the 'military' 550b as in the picture you posted ?

Found this website, might be worth joining & asking whether someone can help

is it just a quirk of mine, or do these things only have 2 settings- Off, or Melt-Your-Face-Off ?
Mine have very limited control, despite having a valve.

My FILs ones have a bit of a hair-trigger but can certainly be turned down to simmer with a deft touch. He usually boils the billy on "kill" and then carefully turns it down to very low as my MIL isn't ready yet. Happens just about every time. You'd think after half a century together they'd have refined it...?

I’d bite the bullet and buy new Colin. It will last a lifetime and I’ve seen crap used one go for $70+ they really hold their value. I’ve used our used one for 10 years now and only changed the generator once. It’s worked in Actic Finland at -15c to boil water and heat meals. Such a great stove. We also have a twin burner I picked up at a garage sale here for $10!

with regards to not running well on unleaded, some of the earlier fuel stoves were not “duel fuel” so only ran well on Coleman white gas / shellite.

Parts for these stoves are not an issue.

What do you guys see as the advantages of a Coleman dual fuel over a gas stove?

What do you guys see as the advantages of a Coleman dual fuel over a gas stove?

No gas bottle to carry (or worry about test dates).
Higher heat output that the disposable gas cannister type stoves.
Fuel available at Bunnings & most hardware stores.
Small volume of fuel gives a lot of hours cooking.
If you're stuck use petrol (but note the comments about potential problems related to this).

I often carry a dual fuel lantern as well, so fuel common to both.
Don't need to use battery power.
Big light output.

Thanks Colin, all excellent reasons.
I guess shellite compared to gas is equally flammable. Do you carry in the plastic bottle it comes in, or decant into a fuel container?
Thanks.

In the plastic bottle usually, well protected in a drawer.
I probably should get a proper fuel bottle but haven't bothered for the last 18 years or so......

Hi,
The bush walking shops have a range of fuel bottles with a dispensing device built in, making it easy to get fuel in a small opening without spillage.
Cheers

Looking at reviews of the Coleman two-burner dual fuel stove, it sounds like the following are the key points... what do you guys reckon?

Pro's:
- Robust long lasting design
- Powerful burners
- Easy to get fuel
- No need to carry gas bottle
Cons:
- Can be difficult to adjust the two burners separately?
- Relatively tight pot space?
- Cant actually turn off until the fuel in the lines burns out?
- Messy - fuel drips from line when removed?

Hi,
The LH burner is for simmer only, it bleeds fuel/air mix from the main burner.
They take up a lot of space.
The fuel load is huge, it will last weeks.
Two single units would be a better arangement if space is an issue.
Mine would not turn off immediately , needed to turn it right down, then blow the flame out, then release the pressure.
Cheers

For me. I got mine as on cold mornings gas just won't work. Anything down around zero = no gas pressure. Had always just dealt with it but the last trip pushed me over as every single night was sub-zero and morning cuppas were problematic... for three weeks straight :( But the FIL's ancient Coleman stove always worked perfectly. Had to go billy in hand each morning...

Here's a cheap option,(Primus copy) that puts out the same power as the Coleman and this one runs on 'gasoline'. You might have to find out what the Ukrainians consider to be gasoline before plunging in to this experiment, but if it would work here it would be a good buy at $50.00

Second burner is a simmer type of thing as mentioned. I’ve not had an issue with pot space - can fit frypan and a small pot beside it no dramas - might be tight if you need pots big enough to feed a whole family but for a couple it’s fine.
Not sure what lines there are to burn out - mine has none - fuel runs from the tank through the generator and is turned off directly at the tank.
Not messy at all - when you turn it off it ‘runs on’ for 10 or 20 seconds which drains the generator and all fuel is left in the tank. Let the pressure out the tank and leave it to cool before packing up.

I’d never go back to gas now I’ve used the dual fuel stove.

Where abouts do you live? Happy to demo mine if your around the Melbourne area.

A mate of mines the same.
I have 2x of the single burner stoves, always ran them on shelite and have never had an issue adjusting the flame from summer to melt your face mode

Collected one from Tentworld (Ferntree Gully) for $93.00.

Forgot that they came with a funnel with built in strainer. Have never used one of these, always managed to pour from the Shellite bottle straight into the tank (you have to hold the single burner stove over at an angle while you do this).
I think I have a couple (unused) somewhere from previous dual fuel stoves.

Takes a few uses to get the hang of it - don’t be put off by the yellow flame when you first light it, it will settle down in no time. When you turn it off, don’t overtighten the valve - the flame won’t go out instantly like a gas burner, it needs to burn out the fuel in the generator first - takes a few seconds. Let the pressure out of the tank when you’re done - and when there are no flames left flickering in the stove. Enjoy. 👍

The funnels work well and minimises the chance of over filling it.
