consider this hypothetical situation;
you have a uhf cb that can scan the police channels.
you are monitoring your local police channel and you hear they are looking for a particular vehicle that has been involved in a crime of some sort. they give a good description of the car and from that description, you see it and where it is heading.
what would you do?

I'm curious as to what prompted this question :!:
As tempting as option 4 might be, it's way bloody dangerous. Not like in the movies at all.
So I answered option 1, BUT only because there was no option for non-anonymity. It often helps if the coppers can contact the informant later to clarify information.
It's just as well I answered that way though, coz I'm in the business(though we get very few car chases https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ )

i live on the northern beaches of sydney and we hear this sort of thing happening all the time. kids come over from the south west and steal high performance cars to go joy riding around our way and baiting the police. there are only 3 ways into and out of the beaches and it would be an ideal way to help cut the car thefts down and maybe even the road toll, by trapping them. if they can't get out of the beaches, they're stuffed.
as the nsw police are so thinly spread, i was wondering how many people would do the "right" thing and make the call.
wouldn't it be great if the 4wd community could build up a positive relationship with the police as well as the NPWS.
of course there would be the worry of false reports and guys wanting to be vigilantes, but i'm sure with a eyes and ears register, this could be minimised.
all of this would have to be hush-hush though, otherwise we would become vandalism targets.
just a thought anyway!!!!

It all depends on the type of crime being committed. If it was a minor crime with no physical damage to persons, then probablly ring the coppers and direct them. If someone was being hurt I would use whatever means were available to assist the person being hurt, including my vehicle.
I would never approach any of them without some sort of weapon of defence.
Way too many people just watch or keep on going. There is too much apathy in our communities these days relating to violent crimes. First option would be to difuse the situation calmly with dialogue, keeping yourself a safe distance and ready for attack.
For example if there were a bunch of youth bashing an elderly person, the situation would be way too dangerous to approach in person, however I would run the little ****** down in my pig, no hesitation.

Been
silly enough to place myself between the bunch of thugs and the target once before. It hurt especially when I refused to fight. Friend ended up parking my car untop of me while reving it 5,000 ridding the clutch. That scared them off. I was to dazed to notice an engine screamin above my head.

I'm with Vlad.
If I see something I ring the cops and tell them who I am, in case they need witnesses.
I've got no probs with standing up in Court and pointing the finger at a scumbag. Done it before and will do it again.
I'd even consider following them if I think I can get away with it. It might cause them to come for me, but I'd like to see a wrx or commode push my D3 off the road!
If we let them go because we "don't want to get involved", then they'll get away with it and next thing we will be involved, because we could very well be the next victims.

Is it possible to make an anonymous phone call from your mobile? When a 000 call comes in I'm sure they record the message and the number that the call came from

Press #31# I use it all the time Blocks your mobile number, or from a land line 1831 then the number. Comes in handy when you don't want the people your contacting to know who you are or what your number is.
Cheers.

I'm pretty sure that 000 can override the cnid blocking from your phone and know exactly where it is coming from.

i think you're right simon. the number blocking doesn't work on the000 line. they get away with this by using the excuse that they can find out where you are in an emergency even if you aren't able to give your location. but i think this is fair enough.
i wouldn't even approach anyone in sydney doing something dodgy. too many kids are carrying weapons now and most of them don't have any quarms about using them.
last year, a mate, my wife and i were at maccas in sans souci (syd), some kid walked into my missus and spilt his drink everywhere. he then threw the rest of his tray on the bench and walked outside and by the time i cauhgt up wth the story, he was in the carpark, throwing a tantrum, tearing the branches off a tree.
as we walked off, him and his mate (both around 14yrs old) followed us and as soon as we were away from the crowd at maccas, started yelling out for us to pay for his meal. while doing this, gesticulating wildly with his left hand, he kept his right hand in his jacket pocket as though he had a gun. he yelled something about busting a cap in our "asses", or one of those type of sayings, but we didn't really want to find out if he was bluffing or not. lets face it, a dead hero is no good to anyone.

i did have to dob an idiot in one arvo on the way home from work. 3 guys of middle eastern appearance (you can't say they are lebs anymore) in a black mercedes clk430 doing about 160-200kmh in an 80 zone during Friday afternoon peak hour, came screaming down the hill in the lane beside me and almost locked it up they braked so hard to avoid running into the car beside me. they then took off again at a similar speed when there was a break in the traffic.
i got their rego and rang the local constabulary. i gave them my name but never heard anything about it, so i gather they never caught them.

That blocks the number so another phone user doesn't see it I'm pretty sure it doesn't block the "telstra" CNI details though that 000 can access.
And yes I would dob them in an wouldn't generally be worried aboput anonimity.

It is not possible to block your number from the 000 or police numbers. It is nothing new and police have actually had this ability for more than 25 years (landlines originally). Uncle was a Fed before he died. At the time they just could not admit having number recognition as it was a privacy issue at the time. Quite often with domestics etc no address, name or number would be given, yet police would turn up. Their standard response was a neighbour complained of a domestic dispute. I can not say I object to that, if it saved you once.

I recently made a call to 000 from my mobile in regards to a old bloke getting more then his fair share of road rage from a car load of young blokes.
Placed the call to 000 only to have the call ring out on both occasions the operator tried. I told the operator not to bother as both them the old bloke and myself stopped at a set of lights.
The heroes continued to yell abuse at the old bloke and started throwing stuff at him.
I hoped out of my van walked along side the drivers side let in the window and grabbed him by the shirt and told him "The **** stops here"
Other wise I'd drag them out of the car one at time and give them what the old bloke would have when he was my age.
To my surprise when I hopped back in the van I had a phone call from a Police woman inquiring about the unsuccessful attempt to call 000 from my phone ( which doesn't send my caller ID).
I told her the car's rego number and informed her of the details leading to the call only to be told that if " I " wanted to take the matter further I could contact my local police station and have a formal complaint taken.
I spotted the same car load of dick heads a few days later only to have them stop next to me only this time they weren't the same,
polite, well mannered even let me merge in front of them.
Shame it hadn't happened a few days earlier then maybe the old bloke wouldn't have needed to be traumatised.

It probably depends on the crime...
BUT anything major I'd happily dob in the dirtbags... and I would not be gutless enough to stay anonymous..
The cops need at the help they can get to make things stick in court...
my 2c worth..

I've had to give 2 statements for the peelers in the last two months. Two unrelated incidents, that didn't involve me.
I'm more than happy to give evidence in court, against some dickwit.
Or to intervene in most situations, where it's necessary.
I do help the peelers out if i can.
I'm more than happy to see (and help) a bent cop get done.
Only in Australia though.
Most of the coppers here are good folks and honest, ethical people.
If this was the Nth of Ireland though, I wouldn't **** on them if they were on fire. and I wouldn't help 'em if they were dying.

I would let the cops know. Why? Cause if some ***** stole my car i would want someone else to let the cops know where it was so the bastards could get caught. Matt

i think you said it all there matt. do unto others..... it's pretty cut and dried really.
just to clarify, i put the anonymous option up there because there is the faction of people that know right from wrong, but do not want to get involved. i figured that an anon option would give a more realistic result.
