View Full Version : BREAKAWAY BATTERY MONITOR

Hi, new to this forum having purchased a 2014 Discovery 4 SE a few months ago (from a Nissan D22 dual cab). We have also upgraded to a full size caravan from our previous Jayco camper. I now find I have to have a battery monitor for the emergency break away device fitted to my vehicle (good old NSW). Has anyone here had this done or can anyone suggest a place on the dashboard that isn't too intrusive. Surprisingly there isn't too much real estate within view of the driver to mount the monitor. Any suggestions welcome.

Contact Tim at Traxide his wireless monitor is brilliant. No wiring just plug it into the 12v outlet when in use. It sits in the centre console unobtrusively.

My unit meets and exceeds the requirements of the NSW regulations and it is easy to fit to any existing Breakaway Battery setup.
Bill if you have the most basic auto electrical skills, you could easily install one of my Wireless Breakaway Battery Monitors.

I should have added there is no wiring at the car end there is a bit of wiring to be done in the caravan.

Lets say Im building a car trailer with a winch and on board battery that will pull secondary duty as the break away battery.
Im assuming that as its only watching voltage the wireless unit should be able to handle this much larger battery capacity.

Hi Dave and no, while a number of wireless VOLT monitors are being sold as Breakaway Battery Monitors, but anybody using these, thinking they meet the requirements, but can actually result in fines of over $600 being issued if a Road Side Inpection is done.
Regardless of whether the In Cab Monitor is hard wired or wireless, it must indicate the CONDITION of the battery and if it is capable of applying and keeping the trailer brakes on for a minimum of 15 minutes.
No VOLT meter can do this and is the reason they are not legal.
My units continually load test the Breakaway Battery and with a few other tests, gives an indication of the CAPACITY of the battery.
