We used them for the first time mid year.
2 different camps, both completely different experiences but great.
Will definitely do it again.

Yep, it’s a great idea however there are some there that price themselves out of the market - I’ve seen some listings that are a bare paddock, nothing to look at for $50 to $80 a night! For a few dollars for the right places and it’s good value and a great idea.

For those of you who are members of CMCA, they have initiated a not dissimilar scheme. For travellers, it well worth the $44 subs pa just to access their wikipedia and camping info sites/apps, quite apart from their excellent insurance scheme. We've been members for about 20? years and very happy with them. Very well run, just like this site. :clap2::thumbsup:

Agree.....some are pricing themselves out of the market or they keep putting the price because they are just too busy.
We look at a couple to stay at earlier this month.....didn’t see the value

When I first came across this a couple of years ago, I thought it was an excellent idea.
But as Gav said, many seem to be pricing themselves out of it,, well, at least out of my business. Several times now I’ve looked at a few just to spend a night or two “in the country”, only to find each time I’d b better off staying at a park or in a motel in town, where you can at least be closer to a pub or whatever you need/want.
Really,, $50+ for a piece of dirt with no facilities (in most cases), is just too much. If you’ve got a van with water etc,, pull up in a wayside stop, or turn off onto a small road and camp by the side.

In NZ a few years ago we used a system known as OK2Stay. With this, provided you were self sufficient, you were allowed to stay for short periods at vineyards, olive groves, rural cafes, berry farms and other enterprises including farms etc free of charge but you were 'encouraged' to sample/buy their produce.
See Okay2stay (https://www.okay2stay.co.nz/about-us)
Worked really well but the best by far was a farm stay where the farmers wife allowed us to hook up to the power, to use her laundry and gave us a very hearty three course meal. Naturally, we offered to pay for this extra service and although she only requested $10pp, we gave her substantially more.
Just found what seems to be a similar Aussie one but have no experience with it. See here Agritourism for RV Drivers in Australia | Farmgate Mate (https://www.farmgatemate.com.au/)

...thousands of camping sites everywhere I go at no cost. Most dont have showers running water and flushing toilets, but its no big deal , didnt have that when I grew up
it's probably good if you want to farmstay.

Thanks Simon for the tip-off,
Just spent a bit of time perusing.
Throwing around the thought of putting our bottom paddock on
It’s about an acre, fully fenced, plenty of shade, 70m creek front. If I was to camp someplace for a weekend it would tick boxes?
Would only be good for one camp/ group.
Far enough from our house and neighbours that noise not a huge drama, but close enough that supplying firewood keeping an eye on things easy.
Just wondering if it’s worth the hassle.
Property <10min away from us has lots of sites on creeks and are asking $15pp with no facilities.
Is $15pp considered OTT spendy?
What would you consider a fair number for what I listed?

Sounds perfect, especially if slashed grass.

The bride and I can be the test campers.....
On costs.....our kids have only just stopped camping with us, a year or two ago it would be have been five of if us so 70$ per night not chance we would stay.
I reckon national parks pricing is about right
I reckon I’d pay ~20$ per night for a couple

Slashed! Heresy !
This paddock is lovingly dressed via a Cox LawnBoss
......Along with 6 other Acres! Eeeek
12 months of analysis paralysis means I keep on running the old ride on
I brought down from Cooktown, few sets of blades and I’ve found most of the
More solid than spinning steel objects to dig out
Still can’t decide between a zero-turn then hire in a local bloke for digging/ hole punching / machinery type stuff
Or buy a small frame tractor like B series Kubota with a mower deck and FEL
Or just cope with ****ty slashed paddocks and zero turn
Or get more “grass to poo converters”
Or ..... ooops time to go mow again
Steve
In any case, if people were going to camp I’d make it purdy like.

You’re welcome to camp anytime
Your site would be stocked with firewood and beer as thanks for that steel lift!
I agree $20 a night would seem about right
So then it’s down to is it worth the hassle?

It's probably one of those things that's ok to do until someone wrecks it for everyone else by leaving a mess, making noise, etc but if you screen who you take you should minimise this. Make sure if you do, put down that it is mandatory to bring Toilets for all or you'll have little holes everywhere...
I'd pay $20 for a night for a couple. That's the same or close to an unpowered site at Caravan park (off peak) where you get showers and flushing toilets. More than that and I wouldn't personally, but I see a lot that are $15 to $20 per night, per person - that gets a bit steep really quickly for a family IMO.

I just set my van up yesterday for our annual camp. We will be camped from 26th to 1st. cost was $30 for a family of five, no charge for the days before while we airnt there. Been camping there for every year for 30 plus years. It is run by nation parks Tasmania and they will come in at least once to give the youger kids a package with coloring in book etc and also explain all abouts the local fauna etc
How good is that for $30
cheers

ps
Also add they comment over the years we leave no trace even though some camps have had 50 humans and 30 dogs, only ever really used 2 sites for our annual camp

I've got a block in snake valley near ballarat I was thinking of renting out to campers. It has a flushing drop toilet and some good spots to set up camp. It's right near the state forest, you can 4x4, dirt bike ride and explore all the old mine shafts.
Maybe this year I'll get up this year and set it up a bit better and start renting it out. [emoji848][emoji848]

There was a news article a while back related to farm camping up in the northern NSW area where the Council was prosecuting the owner - did not have relevant permits, activity zoning (farm only), environmental clearances and no business insurances - the owner then tried to continue with no fees so not then technically a business activity but friends visiting but the precedent had been set - so not so clear cut.

i found this one fb. semi relevant. not sure if fake or not.
Hello, I was wondering if you could please consider my message, especially over this Christmas period.
My husband is an interstate truck driver. He is not a cowboy. He is not on drugs. He just wants to do his job and come home to his wife and 3 children. A lot of parking bays do not have toilets and when he finds one that has, this is often what he finds. Caravans everywhere and no where to park.
He needs his rest and legally can only drive a certain amount of hours. Even if he goes 5 minutes over his time he can be fined $1000's.
Please have consideration for our truck drivers and park your caravans elsewhere. Please do not use truck rest stops for your overnight camp.
I want my husband and my kids want their Dad home for Christmas.
Thank you for reading.

Hi,
One of our locals offers free motorhome parking in a very nice mowed field by a stream, and will accept a $10 donation for the night.
The local caravan park tried to close it down, but council decided as no fees were set, there was no commercial conflict.
Cheers
