As above, my alternator is unhappy, and stiff to turn by hand. Is this someting I get and fit new bearings for, or do I buy another. This is my going to work chariot, so the least time off the road the better. Thanks for any advise, and a happy new year to all.

If it is the original 70 amp defender alt then the bearing at the rear cant be changed.
If it has been upgraded with a 100 amp disco alt the yes the bearings are doable

Thanks, Jboot, I'll get one ordered in the morning and hope it all holds together still I can change it over. By the way, what is the advantage of the disco one? higher amperage, but what does that achieve?

It will depend on what electrical loads you have or need, 100A is better than 70A.

If you get the disco alternator you will need a disco belt, as the pulley is smaller.

As 4bee said, its the load connected.
I had dual Lifeline batteries which absorbed 90 amps combined for about 30 seconds after starting the engine.
Didn't think a short term overload would hurt.
The 70 amp finally needed bearings and when I pulled it down the rotor had been overheated, discoloured.

You can swap the disco pulley to the Defender then you retain the Defender belt [wink11]
Easy to do with a rattle gun air or electric [thumbsupbig]

Yes, so they say.
My defender pulley was tappered,
Brand new disco alt had a keyway, no swapping was going to work.

There are different model alternators so it matters which one you get.

Thanks all, I ordered a Disco 100 amp job this morning, along with a Disco belt. We'll see what happens when the gear turns up. I hope it all fits. The mob I ordered from didn't have a Defender one in stock, and my usual supplier didn't answer the phone, even though the web suggested they would open their doors at 8:30 this morning.
I'll swap the pulley and retain the Defender belt if possible, to avoid future confusion.

I think the pulley size difference is 49mm vs 61mm in diameter ??
