View Full Version : Broken bit in impact driver

So, I snapped an impact bit in an impact driver. The driver is the 6mm hex type, where the bit holder has a magnet to hold the bit in.
any hints to get the remnants out?
I've tried:

Using a strong magnet to pull the remains out
Centre pop and drill out for extraction with easy out (remains are hardened steel, so not super effective)
Needle nose medical tweezers to pull the bit out (bit wobbles but won't come loose due to magnet- tweezers not strong enough)

Exploded diagram for the bit driver does not appear to show the hex driver as a removable part (part of the gearbox assembly).

That's what I get for being lazy I guess... I was attempting to drill-start the lawn mower!

Looks like you're screwed.

can you use inertia by giving it a good whack?

To be more helpful; How about gluing something to the bit, or you could try accelerating the tool away from the bitt i e hit it very hard with something.

Dob of 2 part epoxy.

Part one onto the bit.

Part 2 on a sacraficial piece of.wire.
Press.together let it set and pull.

If you can drill it a self tapper will also get it out

Copy cat............ have a look here:

Snapped impact driver bit (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/261641-snapped-impact-driver-bit.html)

After that little adventure I think that the fretting induced on the 6mm hex bit from driving clockwise is the main reason the remnant won't just spit out when the collet is pulled forward.

Where did you get the bit from? Brand?

cheers, DL

I wouldn't suggest using the ebay Titan brand 1/4" hex drive to 3/8" square 'impact' adapter. Even if in drill mode...

I used to think the same, but properly tuned they should start. But due to lack of maintenance blah blah blah.
I got into the routine of starting the vibe plate with a big 18v rattle gun, instead of getting it tuned.

I was doing up M16 8.8 bolts and nuts with a 1/2" square drive / 6mm hex and impact socket on the new shed.

Now I know I can get the snapped bits out of the collet there has been a bit of torture testing, but that's a tale for another day.

The deed is done.
I attempted the glue trick, but to no avail. Be warned, to some degree it glued the bit into the drill... so use with caution.

I ended up drilling it out. My first attempt burnt out a standard drill bit.
Second attempt was a carbide tipped 'glass and tile' bit which worked well, until the carbide snapped. That was a $20 bit stuffed... whoops.

3rd attempt involved a trip to bunnings where I got a Sutton Cobalt drill bit- much tougher material, and was able to drill the hardened steel of the impact bit. I used a 3.5mm bit.
Backed it up gingerly with a 4mm fine thread tap - M4x0.7 IIRC. Threaded in a bolt, and pinched in the vise and a few love taps with the soft face hammer and it was out.

I went down into the work shop yesterday and one the boys gave me an impact driver that a 1/4 drive that had snapped off inside it.
He tried gluing the flat end of a drill bit, and it didnt work, so i tried drilling it, but as they are hardened, snapped a number of small size drill bits.
...also drilled with a 3.5mm carbide drill bit....still drilling to get a few turns of a tap in....

When I drilled mine I started with a 1.5 or 2mm bit, nothing flash just a fresh gold 'titanium' one.

Used my pov pack cutting paste.... homebrand sorbelene cream from Woolies $2 and went easy with pressure. Got about 7-8mm in then reamed the hole out with a 3.5mm bit.

Used an M4 tap to get a grip and it came out as easy as.

Most recent 'incident' was snapping the chuck retaining screw (L/H thread) in an AEG 18V drill whilst unscrewing some rather large coach bolts. (Drill with handle has more grunt than the impact driver)

Was covered by warranty, but didn't have time for the run around over Xmas.

Used the same process and it came out surprisingly easily even though it was obviously HT and loctited into the shaft.

Used a replacement from an plder German made one in pieces. Was identical.

It really is amazing how much grunt these things have, and that's what causes these problems.

cheers, DL
