Anyone heard of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes?
I just found out my grandfather was a member.

My grandmother died last year and the family were sorting through her things, and came across an old port.
Inside was various paperwork, membership cards, rule books etc, as well as ceremonial accoutrements (medals and associated regalia) belonging to my grandfather. These date from the 1950s's.

And another thing I just found out.. my grandfathers real first name was Desmond. We'd always known him by 'George' which is actually his second name. https://www.australianhunting.net/Smileys/ahn/2.gif

The RAOB. Interesting stuff.

A social, fraternal, philanthropic order for adult males. Not as secretive as Freemasonry.

When I was a young bloke I thought the point of being a Buff was to drink grog on Sundays. Every Buffalo Hall one drove past on a Monday morning had an impressive number of empty kegs awaiting collection. The Qld. liquor laws of the time had some strange exemptions to the usual "no smiling on Sundays" laws of the era. Much like bowls clubs. Buffs could serve grog for two hours after a lodge was held. so a canny club manager scheduled lodge meetings one after the other all Sunday.

Desmond.! What a great name [bigsmile] & I wonder if he was also named after Captain Desmond VC, a Military hero & sexually attractive womaniser of the Indian NW Frontier in days of yore, (if his birth date was around 1936 then it is a safe bet it was) & the subject of a number of novels by the Author Maude Diver? Google her & Captain Desmond VC.[smilebigeye]

I will have to check but I am sure there was an old weatherboard building on Targo St. (in Bundy) with "ROAB" over the door.

There was a RAOB (buff) club in Broken Hill when I grew up.

It was always a secret what happened there but the hall was regularly hired out for auspicious occasions.

I was persuaded to join the lodge Black Swan when working in Perth WA in 69 by a bloke that lived in the same boarding house. I wasnt sure what his motive was but I joined up and learnt the secret passwords etc. Went to a couple of meetings but got a job in PNG so left the area.
Cant remember if one joins for life or what[bighmmm]

Auspicious or Suspicious??[smilebigeye]

Sounds a bit like the "Gollywog Club" at the Breakout Creek ( AKA River Torrens,) West Beach in Adelaide. As Sea Scouts, our boat shed was within aprox 50 m from their shed. We imagined all sorts of stuff going on inside, no proof mind you, just teenage imaginations.[bighmmm]

I wonder if they ever wondered what we got up to?[bighmmm]

Never had a problem with them in regards to noise, drunkenness etc but they always got in first with the best sea front car parks.

After many years of "co-habiting" with the Gollywogs we never did get a hint. BUGGER!

One of life's mysteries, not unless one of you lot was a "Gollywog" & can spill the beans.[biggrin]

Edited. It appears as though they just moved on to another location. Seems it was a Bachelor's Club so probably our guesswork wasn't far wrong.[smilebigeye]Gollywog Bachelor Club - Social Clubs - 358 Port Rd, Hindmarsh South Australia - Phone Number - Yelp (https://www.yelp.com.au/biz/gollywog-bachelor-club-hindmarsh)

.....some of the medals and stuff worn was pure gold, I have a medal of rank from an uncle of mine made from gold.....its more than a medal but have to call it something......some of it would be quite valuable or maybe the lodge would love to have it back for history.

There was another one which helped my family pay nearly all medical and pharmacy bills...we were a large family.

It was the GUOOF...Grand United Order of Oddfellows , I assume was/is a lodge. Can't recall what dad had to do with it , it may have been religious as dad was a lay preacher.

I'll have to look it up now.

yes it was a lodge and somewhere there was a United Friendly Society which paid our medical and pharmaceuticals . I remember a UFS Dispensary and mum sending me up the street on my treadly to get stuff to treat whoever was sick.

I didn't see any reference to UFS operating today...it was better than any medical insurance or anything similar operating now.

Regalia, rather than medals.

Possibly they weren't interested in making millions in profit for the members & today they are only interested in that only for the shareholders & so were victim of a takeover for a US, French, UK, China et al multinational company.

A small one, to which we were members did exactly that. Rates went through the roof & service seemed to become a dirty word.

The buff club in Darwin has been where it is on the Stuart hwy for as long as I can remember ( I reckon about 1980 was first time I really noticed it but am sure it was there for longer than that ), been in there many times but never thought about what it’s origins were. I actually thought it was some territory thing , bit like humpty doo.

Cheers Ean

Most people would recall the name 'I.O.O.F. Friendly Society'. International Order of Odd Fellows. Eventually became just another private health insurer, no doubt absorbed into some multinational now.

There is a Buffs Club in Mt Isa, now the Irish Club has gone it is probably the best club type place in town.

This Buffs thing is interesting.

Does it imply members all get around in the Buff? Where do I sign up?[biggrin]

No Irish Club in the Isa anymore? The joint wont be worth stopping at now!
Coles wrecked the Truck Port, where the best buff steaks, in the world, used to be purveyed .

Did they sponsor a rugby league club from there?

it is RAOB club I had a look yesterday. There is a local footy ( AFL ) team called the Darwin Buffaloes but I don’t think they are sponsored by the club , but I could be very wrong as it’s not something I follow closely.

Jonesfam, are you sure? Their 'phone still rings and their web site is still active. The Irish Club in Mt. Isa was the highest volume liquor outlet in most of North and West Qld.

I could be wrong.
I tried to go there a few years ago but it was all closed up.
I just asumed it had closed, might have just been closed up for a reno or something short term?
When I go to Mt Isa these days I usually stay in a Motel in town, so the Buff's is handy to walk to for a feed & if one happens to over indulge I'm walking back to the Motel anyway.

I did have some BIG night at the Irish back in the 90's.
