View Full Version : Perentie Clutch Upgrade

Hi All,

I was driving down town yesterday and unfortunately without any warning my clutch pedal went to the floor (no pressure) and a grinding noise came from the floor. The noise went away and the clutch pedal came back up again and I was able to continue driving and using the gearbox as normal before it happened again about 10kms further down the road. This happened about 4 more times before I drove the vehicle into my mechanics garage. He seems to think the thrust bearing or the sleeve is somehow damaged and is floating maybe. Any thoughts from the Perentie community?

I started looking up replacement clutch kits and I believe that there is a heavier duty clutch kit for the Perentie and that it is recommended one is installed if a turbo is bolted onto the 4BD. I don't have a turbo on my RFSV but may well install one in the next couple of years, so if I am going to replace the clutch I thought I may as well upgrade the clutch to suit a turbo now if it needs replacing.

Any thought from the knowledgable Perentie community would be much appreciated as I my mechanic is going to drop the gearbox next week and I told him I would look into the options before ordering a clutch kit.

Grinding noise suggests it could be something to do with the extension sleeve on the input shaft housing Warwick but you shouldn't lose the pedal if it moves. If it was the thrust bearing it would happen constantly I think. Best idea I can think of would be to buy a HD clutch kit which should have a new thrust bearing in it and change the clutch out. You will find what it is when you pull it and at least you should have all the bits to fix it. If it is the extension sleeve coming loose just clean it all up and loctite it back on. Give Tristan a call as he has just had a similar thing happen with his 6x6 which turned out to be a loose extension housing sleeve, and his had been welded on.

the hd kit for any of the 110s is the 6x6 clutch.

most likely its related to the throw out bearing but I have seen a fragmented spigot bearing do it as well as the precusor for a failure of the input shaft bearing.

Ive seen it first hand for one case of each and had a couple of reports for the shrapnel of the spigot bearing.

For the gearbox bearing the support cage for the front roller bearing had fractured and one ball was damaged when the damaged ball caught the damaged section of its support cage (And this is an as near as I can figure it) the ball was wedging onto the cage then spitting the cage forwards around the bearing a little or it was clicking the damaged section of the ball onto the cage.

I did 2 throw out bearings, a clutch assembly and a spigot bearing on that one before the fault made itself apparent while a board appy idly turning the input shaft got it stuck.

Thanks Bearman and Blacknight for your advice. I hope it is not the front roller bearing on the gearbox and it is just the extension sleeve. I will order the HD clutch kit and let you know once the gearbox has been removed what the cause is.

Exactly the same symptoms as I had a few months back. Have a read of my thread "gearbox help please" still only a few threads down the page. The noise was caused by the input sleeve coming loose on the input shaft after the tack welds done be some army ....... mechanic gave way. Fixed by cleaning and locktiting the sleeve to the shaft. All good now! I didn't replace the clutch or throwout bearing as all was near new.

Hi rathgar,

Thanks for reminding me about your post, "gearbox help please". I reread it this morning and I think I have the same issue that you had with the extension sleeve. The box will come out this week as it is at my mechanics garage now and he has a set up to remove the box on his hoist. I will see if I can take some photos once it is apart and post them on the forum as it sounds like it might be possible more perentie owners could have similar issues in the future.

This is an old post, but I'm experiencing the exact same problem. What was the resolution in the end?

As mentioned above, the input sleeve was sliding on the shaft. I ended up putting a KLR Heavy Duty Clutch kit in while I had the gearbox out.

It is all good now, touch wood. I have done over 30 000 klm's on the new clutch.
