View Full Version : 2.2 Puma engine noise and temperature

Ive got a `whirring` noise in the front end of puma, it rises with engine revs and I am thinking alternator or belt tensioner, its been doing it for the past 5-10k, but Im so busy with the fire season that I haven't had a chance to track it down..another issue lately is that when the ambient temp is up above 35, on long steep pulls in top gear, the temp gauge moves up slightly, followed by a surging motion in the vehicle and slight loss of power and weirdly, the aircon looses its cool.. change down a gear and ease up on the throttle and all is normal. The gauge has never moved before, and doesn't get into the red..What are the chances that the viscous fan has crapped itself and is the cause of the noise, overheating and aircon?? Any ideas?

That's normal overheat protection, AC off and fuel reduced at 118 degrees Cyl head temp....I would think that the viscous fan should be the first port of call to check, yes.
Whirring noises I had in one recently was the main fan support bearing, comes as the whole front bracket etc and is a pain to fit...

That's normal overheat protection, AC off and fuel reduced at 118 degrees Cyl head temp....I would think that the viscous fan should be the first port of call to check, yes.
Whirring noises I had in one recently was the main fan support bearing, comes as the whole front bracket etc and is a pain to fit...

It seems to make sense that its all related, interesting about the overheat protection, Ill check it out tomorrow and see if anything is obvious,
Can you purchase the viscous unit as a seperate item, or is it a complete fan unit?

Its actually the same as the td5 fan assembly, just get a OEM or genuine one!! They certainly need a good fan. If you get to plug in a nanocom etc you can see the CHTemp rise to 118 and it goes straight into fuel cut.. only then does the gauge move... in my opinion a stupid a dangerous design. If you were being followed by a B Double and this happens then you'd best get the heck off the road...

Also backing off in advance, down to 5th at 100km/hr will keep the temp down on a long hill.

Question is, how accurate is an Ultragauge 'Engine Temp' reading compared to a Nanocom 'CHTemp' reading? Does Engine Temp equate to Cylinder Head Temp as an OBD reading?

Maybe try switching the aircon on/off. The compressor on mine whirrs a bit.

I have had the same symptoms with the aircon cutting out although the first time I had observed the surging was coming up the long hills on the Hume between Goulburn and Yass the other day. I had pretty much put it down to the heat and a headwind. Have had the aircon cut out and the temp gauge move upward on a long pull with the trailer on the back on a hot day. Changing down allowed it to cool and proceed normally.

I literally just logged on the ask this same question. I have had it at 110kmh in ~30deg in my 90 very lightly loaded

Guessing I have a cooling system issue i need to resolve. Will start with the visc fan as suggested.

I posted a thread a couple of years ago on replacement of the bearing itself without spending the $600+ to replace the whole casting that it is pressed into. The double-row ball bearing can be obtained for about $50. No less a pain to fit though.

I decided to pull the belt of my ute tonight as it really played up today again in the heat, pushing about 7ton up a long grade, temp went up as usual and started to loose power.
It appears the idler below the aircon has a buggered bearing, its still tight but makes a hell of a rattle, so Ive ordered a new one. The viscous fan appears to be working ok, its certainly coming on, but how effective it is running is another question. But the biggest issue is totally my fault, the radiator was totally full of crap to the point that you couldn't see through a lot of it, Ive blown it clean and will be interested to see if thats the problem solved..Ill be giving it another work out tomorrow so hopefully thats the 2 issues answered for..

As a side note, my spare belt thats been under the seat of the last 2 Utes doesn't fit, I was told the 2.4 and 2.2 used the same belt..glad I found out in my driveway and not out in the scrub.

Ran the ute all day yesterday in extreme heat and was 400kg heavier and not an issue. It held its temp with no signs of heating up or the other symptoms, so I can recommend to pull the fan cowl off and get some compressed air or water into the radiator and give it a good clean out, only takes 10 min.

Thanks Tim, you just solved an 18 month long problem I've been trying to solve and was too stupid to think of.... My Tractor gets crap in the radiator and needs to be cleaned out but for some reason even though the Defender gets driven round the same paddocks it didn't occur to me that the radiator might be blocked. I was off considering whether the viscous fan was on the way out or whether the bigger intercooler had somehow fundamentally altered the tuning. Sometimes its the bleeding obvious stuff...... As you said, pop the shroud and spend 10 minutes with a hose.
