I had to travel up to Torres Strait during the week. Stopping in Cairns I saw heaps of Landies of all sorts including a couple of D3s obviously fitted out for cruising.

Up on Thursday Island there are heaps of 4wds - don't know what they are used for because except for putting the boat in, there is no where to use them. You cannot even easily get them off the island as there are no car ferries. Most of the 4wds are Japanese of all types with many almost brand new.

I spotted 2 early series 2 or 3s dead in back yards and a couple of series doors against a shed but the only going landy out of hundreds of 4wds spotted was a nice series 3 parked on the wharf. I didn't even see any in the army compound but there was a unimog parked there - I assume there must be at least one army landie somewhere.

So it looks like landys are not popular in the area and it looks like none have gone up there for many many years.

I just got back yesterday have have to go back up for a couple of days the week after next - it is a nice place to visit but a pain to get there - 12 hours by plane taking into account waiting around airports and weeks by car.

I was on TI myself, not that long ago. I agree, full of jap fourbies. It costs $900 to get a car from Cairns to TI by the regular barge. I also saw a 1000cc Sports bike (Honda, I think) on TI. I wondered where he would get the use out of it...

Given the island is only about 3 miles long and only half as wide and you cannot drive off it I, was surprised at the number of late model 4wds there - dunno where they go - guess they are for show. Even our work vehicle there is a new diesel Hilux - we have to use it to put the staff fishing boats in the water.

The other thing I was really suprised about was the number of cars on the island anyway. You can walk anywhere in 10 or 15 minutes. If I lived there I'd only want a bicycle to get about and to cart the shopping home in a home made bicycle trailer.

A tank of petrol would last for ever, though...
