View Full Version : Replacing Front Inner Door Seal

I'm replacing the front inner door seal due to the usual failure adjacent to the door latch.
When I peel back the existing seal there seems to be a white 'goo' used there which may serve to glue the rubber to the body.
People who have replaced theirs before:
Does this 'goo' need replacing at the same time the seal is replaced?
If it does need replacing what is it called / what do I ask for when visiting such places as SuperCheap etc.
Thanks

Where did you get your new seal - from a dealer or aftermarket/overseas?
Thanks

I managed to get 2 replaced under warranty. Wasn't impressed as the first failed in less than a year. Dealer said it's soft deliberately and is classed as a consumable item. First car I've owned where this has happened. Never had a problem before with other makes. That said the seal they provide is top notch. From memory they were between one and two hundred dollars at the dealer. I got used to it after a while and will replace again when it get too bad, so interested in how you go as well.

About £42 each side from UK when I checked a while back.

Rimmer Bros. LR037755. Same part no. for both sides. ~$94 at the time I ordered which was few months ago.

I've noticed this goo and had assumed that it came pre-coated on the new seal.
I also got that impression from the guy at the repair place when my door seals were replaced together with new door skins after getting sideswiped.
Have you had a look inside the new seals?
Cheers,
Scott

Bingo.
Just had a look. Yep, white goo is pre-installed within the rubber crevice that fits over the metal ridge the rubber seal mounts on. Just push the seal on, the white goo spreads about.
Thanks.

On my list of things too, my drivers side popped like a party balloon last November. Price from Rimmer’s is good. Just need to prioritise it, a few more urgent things on the list...

Brighton Land Rover have said its not a warranty item to me. Can you send me some paper work?? Mine is still under an extended warranty but even under the 3 year warranty the seal failed. They blamed me for it ...

I'll see if I can find the invoice that shows the item. Get back to you. If you don't hear in a day or two, remind me.:bangin:

By the way, my wife's a corporate lawyer and had a contract for several months at Izuzu, where she read the ACCC report on the motor industry and warranties etc. Evidently much of the issues concern dealerships ... and also, warranties are often much behind what the ACCC says should be "fit for purpose". A door seal that's badly made is unfit for purpose, especially in a vehicle intended for dusty roads.
The bummer is that one now seems to have to write lengthly letters and complain, and record and list your complaints - and in the meantime, LR will not even know that their rubber door seal supplier has been ripping them off by making **** quality seals, that probably saved them 35 cents in rubber or 15 pennies .

I disagree- the door seals work perfectly and are clearly good quality rubber.
Unfortunately, it is impossible not to scrape past them when getting in and out. This will depend on your backside size, shape and nimbleness.
I can’t see how LR can avoid this and still create a complete 360 degree seal.
Mine are 10 years and are worn through in about a 10cm section on driver and passenger side near door lock. Still no problem sealing out dust or noise. Fair wear and tear.
A dealer out of generosity may give you this but probably doesn’t have to. These cosmetic issues are touch and go. I got the upgraded deluxe leather steering wheel when I complained in warranty the standard crappy rubber one was a bit perished on the top.
It’s like claiming your windscreen wipers or tyres have worn out (which I’m sure people try to do).

I still have a 90 series Prado 3.4 petrol GXL - I bought it new, in 1996 (or 1997)!!! But the door seals work fine. That vehicle has done more miles, and still has its rubber seals. In fact, I've never had a vehicle with failed door seals, and I've been driving for some time.
By the way, does the D3 have the exact same problem? Because if it does not, then I would say its most clearly Land Rover's fault in changing the rubber quality.
As far as wear and tear goes - give me a break. I reckon manufactures build in obsolesence

Not sure if materials would have changed but the only problem I’ve heard about is the wearing out of the seal where your hip / bum rubs on it getting in and out.
The rest of my seals are perfect.
Now, this is also a function of design. We all love the unique shape of our Disco and seat position and maybe this makes the seal / hip interference sub optimal. That’s something I would not change for a $80 piece of rubber as I love the style of Disco 100x over a Prado or other 4WD alternative.
(Have you ever noticed on the Disco3 pre-LED how the rear indicator light is sized perfectly in line and dimension with the moulded rear panel crease when looking at the back of the car and off to one side..........mmmmmmmmmmm........a very nice detail lost in the new tail lights)
I heard that the door seals on the DeLorean were an absolute nightmare due to the top hinge.
My seat material has also cut through on the side where my 100kg squishes the seat into the plastic base panel.

I replaced all 4 of mine for around $650 delivered from Duckworths. I thought it was expensive so did a comparison with a 200 series and theirs were $800.
