6x6 electrics.... fix or bin?

To solve a few little bugs, I have pulled all the dashboard apart on my 6x6. It is not a quick job - first thing is to remove the steering wheel and then the work begins.

Amongst other things, I note that if a vaccuum lead fails on the off-road selector, this same process is required to gain access. Practically any other electrical fault will also need this big strip down.

I love the design and thought that have gone into these vehicles, and I love the success of the design. However, I hate the horrible rats nest of thousands of wires are all scrunched up in an electrical nightmare. I am considering ripping it all out and starting again, and possibly also making a complete new dash assembly so that access will be much easier in the future.

Has anyone been down this path? Does anyone have any comments for or against the idea? The vehicle has already been de-militarised, so originality is not an issue. Any thoughts or ideas very welcome.

If you have the skills and knowledge to do this, then I couldn't see a reason why not if you were so inclined. The original wiring has stood the test of time pretty well generally, so it all comes down to personal choice. I have completely rewired my 101 and half rewired my RRC - which I did to de-lucas it, but the 101 I did for more than one reason - easy removal of the dash was one of these reasons. A 101 dash is a nightmare to remove as the 2 mechanical temp gauges need to be removed from the engine and oil cooler and carefully fed back through while removing the dash - or else try and get in behind the gauges and unscrew them, but I never managed to get them far enough forward to do that, so I undid them - I can get mine out now in around 5 minutes if needed - it's all plug and play.

A lot less complicated than the Perentie wiring, but the concept is similar. If you haven't done this sort of thing before, when you think you know how long it will take - triple that, and you'll be close. There are countless hours involved to do this properly and more importantly - reliably, so you don't have issues later on.

No, it means I used to fix them and knowing the arn sequence would always manage to have the appies on anything 6x6 electrical ish or dash ish..

and then I went and bought one.

Appy’s finished in the early 90’s...47th or 48th class

Thanks Homestar, yes, I didn't expect to finish it in a weekend. I too had a 101 for a while, very interesting vehicle but the front end rumble drove me nuts.

My reason for rewiring is to get it reliable - I have had quite a few electric issues, and looking at that mass of wires, I am not surprised, especially since mine is pretty much mud spattered behind the dashboard. I suspect it has been swimming, in muddy waters!

Ouch RAR110, I feel for you.......

Over the years I have seen so many brilliantly designed vehicles with insanely complex and untidy wiring. Having spent many years looking at motorbike electrics, I have to say that British bikes with their Lucas systems had the best designed electrics. Very simple, very reliable, apart from the odd exploding alternator rotor. The Lucas H4 headlights fitted to early Nortons (and Ford GTHO's) has yet to be equaled. Unfortunately by the time Norton and Triumph considered electric feet the rot had set into the industry, and they did it on the cheap and it didn't work. But otherwise I am a great fan of Lucas.

I believe there are too many wires in the Perentie, and many are much too long, making the under-dash a bit of a nightmare. But I am not looking forward to fixing it!

Yes, they are pretty unique. Rumble is a bit of a bitch but I get by. Grey Ghost has fixed his completely with a double-double carden front shaft. That’s on my to do list. 👍😊

Sure do Dave.Part of my trade was fixing" the prince off darkness" problems that the VM's couldnt fix.I had one appy (a 43rd ish)rewire the engine bay and dash all in black.I returned from a bush trip ready too kill him.His safe place turned out to be Holdsworthy(MCE).AWOL....
