View Full Version : Fuel Economy - 3.5 V8

Today I drove from Alice Springs to Tennant Creek (500km) and used 65 litres of unleaded. I was only doing 80 - 90 kph to see how good I could get the economy. This is in a slightly lifted 87 Range Rover Hiline EFI.
What sort of economy are others getting from their V8s?

I was pretty happy with that economy. Windows down, no A/C on. No trucks involved!
The car has been spring lifted and has a homemade 3 inch snorkel. Also fitted with a steel ARB bullbar with drving lights (Hella Bull220) above the top tube. I don't think the wind resistance is anything to brag about!
I still have to go to Darwin and back to Alice over the course of the next week, so I will keep an eye on the economy throughout the trip. I suspect that sitting on 110 kph will give much worse figures.

I'm starting to hink about a V8 D2 when I update, the figures I've been hearing lately have been very good. With the price of V8s now it's really worth considering.

That is really true.. you will probably save more than the difference will be on fuel over quite a while. Just remember that in remote travelling with a
V8 you have to carry lots more fuel https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ When the going gets harder the V8 will use lots more than the diesel.

There used to be a Red County at the L/R dealership in Alice owned by one of the mechanics who used to work on the Nor-Force L/R .
We met up with him at Matoranka and Katherine at the servo , he had a 3.5 v8 and was averaging about 13lt -100km 8O 8O driving a brick at 100km per hour ! He showed me some of his mod's and to say the least i was impressed 8) 8)
I believe he still has the County and now lives in Daly River .

Tennant Creek to Katherine, about 700 kms, travelling between 90 to 110 kph, still used about 13.5 litres per hundred. Any faster than that and it tapers off prety quickly.
I am wondering if the addition of the snorkel is helping my fuel consumption.

I went out fourwheel drivin in my rangie on the weekend.... (see vic reports)
I drove 147km and use just over 3/4 tank (80l) thats why i drive a diesel as a DD https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
BTW its a worked 3.9 with an after market EMS and 35" tyres (and i drove back in 2 wheel drive..........with about 200kg of mud stuck to it https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

This thread got me interested so I took the old stage 1 out and drove it at 80-90 Km/h (something that its not accustomed to) I got 13 per 100 on petrol and 22.62 per 100 on LPG. Much better than I thought all I have to do is discipline my self to drive at this speed all the time.

Around town my normal is 19-20ltr per 100 km
But out on the highway it is normally around 16 ,I have had it down to 14.5:lol: https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Pulling that camper trainer off road.... usually pushes the numbers back to city figures
oh well..... no point in earning it if you can't spend it I figure...

My Rangies Both get around 13L/100km doing highway stuff. And thats through the LT95 (1.1:1 High) and 3.54 diffs I am very happy with that. Out bush they're not bad either.
The carbied V8s seem to be way better on fuel than the 'Injected ones.

With the D3 which is a 4.4 V8, I have been pretty impressed with the figures. At the moment it is around 15.1/100km and that is a combo of highway and urban driving. I would be doing 6-800km's a week. As Captn pointed out, offroad it guzzles more or if I am planting the foot, but after 3 days of beach driving on Fraser the figure rose to around 15.7/100kms.

P.S and yeah go the V8's

D1 93 V8 auto 280,000ks (today!)
Did a run from home to Beaudesert. Full from home, refilled at B.
Refilled at home after the run. 330ks round trip and I was in a hurry, climbing over the Lions Road, which is very steep and windy.
16.6 litres to the 100. Must need a tune....

I drove from Melb to Perth in a 1992 3.5ltr manual disco in Feb. No A/C (well only for a day and a bit before the gas leaked out!). I sat on about 105-115kms/hr for most of the trip.
I wasn't towing anything, but I had a bit of a load in the back (mainly LR parts  )
Mileage: between 14.5-15.5ltr/100km for the trip - not as good as my 300TDi rangie, but not that bad.

Updated figures, currently doing around 13.7/100km which for a 4.4 V8 is pretty bloody good in my books, mind you I am being a bit easier on the pedal  ,

On the highway, I usually get around 15 l/100km out of my '87 RR. That's sitting on 110kph.
I did a trip in January from Sydney to Adelaide towing an empty car trailer & returned with it full.
I only sat on 90kph for the whole trip & the additional weight on the return leg seemed to make no difference at all. It returned 15l/100km each way.
A workmate's father did a trip to Tassie a while ago in his '86 RR & averaged 10l/100km 8O . A week later, he burnt a valve out from running too lean  .

I definitely need a tune. Today's top up was 68 litres for 380ks which at $1.25 / litre was about $800000000000.........

How time flies eh, guys? Posted a quick note two weeks ago and jibed about the juice costing $1.25. Two weeks later and another 10 cents dearer, make that $90000000000! no exagggggeration, Scousie!
Digressing, there must be some poor bastards getting seriously knocked around by these prices, judging by what's being 'dumped' on ebay. I think I saw a 96 D1 V8 two days ago which appeared quite okay for just $5000. Geeeeeeeezzzzzz!!! and there are plenty more for not much.....glad I'm not selling.

Hi All,
Interesting thread here as I am now the proud owner of 1981 RR
3.5 V8 Auto stock standard (motor wise).
What would you look at changing to improve fuel comsumption.
I was thinking of gas conversion but the mob that converted my D1 V8i
say they cannot fit it to RR because of the twin strongberg set up not
that I want to spend that sort of money at this time.
Will be changing points & plugs (this weekend) and taking it to local
mechanic who services and does repair does work for local car yard
that sells Landrovers /Disco's on regular basis.
Want them to tune carb's and check timing.
So would appreciate feed back as to modifications I should be looking
at
Cheers

Hi
Not that I want to recommend Jeeps in this website (considering I just bought an 86 EFI rangie) but a while ago I was looking at them and came across this guy
http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/
he has spent a lot of time trying to improve the power and economy of his xj cherokee and when I last chatted to him he reckoned he was down to a consistent 12 l/100k highway (from 16) and about 16 around town (as well as up from 130 odd KW to 165kw at last check!!)
Look at the engine and driveline modifications section and check out the info on the manifold swap. Does anyone know if this might work on RR - ie 3.9 manifold on a 3.5? Are they the same size/fit?
I don't know myself, only just started looking at options for my project. At the moment I'm tossing up between an injected or carbed 4.4 (I have cheap access to a rebuilt one) or just stick with a rebuilt 3.5 that came with the car and try to make that more efficient. I'll ask q's about that later.
Cheers

I've got a 79 Rangie with a 4.4. It has SUs not Strombergs (no diaphragm), and I run it 99.9% of the time on gas.
It gets 19L/100K on gas and about 17L/100K on petrol.
At 48c/L that's good economy.
