Castrol Magnatec Professional A5 5W30 is the current version of the LR recommended oil for the 2.7L, 3.0L, 3.6L and 4.4L diesel engines that are not fitted with a DPF. I used it in my 3.0 D4 and now use it in my 4.4 TDV8 L322.
Perhaps Castrol has very recently renamed it to Edge but I bought a 20L drum of Magnatec Prof A5 a day or 2 ago.
It appears that Castrol market both Edge and Magnatec in the A5 5W30. Both meet the Ford spec for these engines.

I’ve not seen an Edge that meets the spec. The Magnatec Professional however does. I’d be interested to see a link the the retail “edge” product that claims to meet the spec.

Does your D4 have a DPF?
Have a look for yourself, do not rely on anyone else saying yes or no. Castrol technical insist that all Australian diesel D4s have a DPF as that is what their computer say, this is incorrect.
Check the exhaust as it leaves the engine bay under the front passenger area.

Is this oil suitable for a MY10 D4 HSE 3.0 TDV6??

With no DPF you need spec 5W30 WSS-M2C913-B or C or D

The first batch of 3.0 D4s were fitted with a DPF so either the VIN has to be referred to or as already stated, have a look.
LR dealers usually use the DPF spec oil in all TD/SDV6 engines probably to avoid having to keep 2 oils and to avoid the possibility of making the mistake of using non-DPF oil when a DPF is fitted. However oil compatible with DPFs doesn't look after the engine quite as well as the correct non-DPF version of the oil.
Edge Prof A5 5w30 appears to have slightly different benefits to Magnatec Prof A5 5w30 so perhaps choose the one that you think will better look after your engine considering your driving.

Hi Graeme. Can you point me to the evidence for this? I understand there are some wives tales about this but absolutely zero evidence I’ve been able to dig up to support this assertion. Just because an oil uses an additive pack or constitution that produces less ash to help the DPF, doesn’t have to mean it doesn’t protect the engine as well. In fact, the add packs etc for low ash oil cost more and thus more complex I believe so one might argue that the oils are of better quality with less “****” so to speak? I don’t know, but I’d love to base this on fact.

Are any guys in Perth using a 5w40 was recommended by an indie but after doing a lot of reading i'm starting to question if i did the right thing.
As long as the 5-40 uses the fords specs it should be good to go, yes?

Yes people are. Also the invoices I have from Barbagallo report using a 5W-40 Castrol Professional oil (before my ownership). I am not sure that the invoice reflects what they actually use however. I know from my experience of dealer management systems it’s all pre-canned and little on the invoice relates to the reality of the activities.

That doesn’t work for mine, and I suspect others, MY14, SALLAAAN5EA****** ‘N’ isn’t even listed as an engine option.
Only way to be 100% is to actually have a look at the exhaust as it runs under the front passenger footwell.

The specification difference was discussed some years ago. Whilst improvements in oils since that time may have closed the gap, neither LR nor Ford originally specified or currently specify the DPF compatible oil when no DPF is fitted.

I have been using Penrite HPR5 5w40 Ford M2C913 C/D in a MY11 SDV6 [Non DPF] buy it in 6 litres and a good price at Supercheap $44.89. Noticed Penrite Enviro stated on the 6 litre container that it was suitable for DPF and non DPF...cost nearly twice as much though!Inox and Lanox not bad priced at $12.15 each.

I work on the fact that LR/Ford have specified a different oil for non-DPF and DPF engines there must be a reason for this. Which I why I will be using the correct spec non-DPF Stop-Start Magnatec A5 oil in mine.

According to the specifications you can use the low ash DPF compatible oil in the non-DPF cars.
It’s up to you whether you do that or get an oil that only suits the non-DPF. I’m not going to enter into that debate, again.

My diametrically opposed theories are :
- The DPF compatible oil is better put together with more goodness to not burn in a manner that is detrimental to the DPF.
- The DPF compatible oil is missing some goodness that helps protect the engine better but burns in a manner detrimental to the DPF.
We will never know, so there is nothing to really debate other than opinion (and we all have one). So pick the best oil you can at the time with the little information available to you, change it frequently and be content that your Landrover will probably die of something completely un-lubrication related long before oil choice becomes an issue.

I use the Penrite C4 Enviro 5w 30 stuff most owners use in their D4 3ltr for the mid oil changes (every 10K between/after the book service) which costs around 10/11 bucks a litre.
Last indie charged me twice as much because it was a "special" oil..... that must have applied to the filters as well because I get them from the "stealer" at half their prices. :(
I'm quite happy with that oil although in the 2.4 Puma I had for 5 years the engine seemed (maybe imaginery :) ) noisier than with the recommended Castrol for that engine...

Unfortunately Rick this oil, while a 5W-30, is not designed to meet the relevant Ford WSS-M2C913/934 specifications for Land Rover usage. If you want a Castrol oil that does, you have to order the Castrol Professional range of lubricants. Supercheap regularly sells various Penrite’s that meet spec and are half price often.
