Is there any engineering reason why a 2a body and running gear can't be fitted to a series 3 chassis, need to know before I go down chassis resto path
Cheers Paul

The biggest reason is that the ADRs apply to the chassis not the body and most of the changes from S2 to 3 were related to safety ADRs such as a padded dash and flush door hinges.
There is no physical reason as all the mounting points should be the same. Long wheelbase chassis is a different construction but that's not really a problem.

TimJ.

Does a 2a have the padded dash, seat belts, etc?
I am thinking that it would be registered as a S3 due to the chassis number.
Which would mean that it needs to meet S3 ADR’s - like the padded dash, seat belts, door cards?, intermittent wiper?

It would need to meet the ADRs of the year of the chassis which could be anywhere from around 1971/2 up to 1982/3 as far as I know. There were quite a few changes in that era. Some were pollution control, some were safety related but you would have to know the year to be sure.

IIa has a steel dash, what appear to be individually fitted seatbelts, no door cards.

Nothing a set of stamps and a "replaced" spring hanger cant fix [emoji6]
Im actually going to do the opposite, got a 2a chassis from GG that im going to rebuild my s3 on.

Yeah, just restamping your original chassis number onto a donor chassis solves your issues. You can buy brand new chassis’s with no number stamped in them - just push in your original number, so no different here IMO.

Bur why an s3 chassis? Unless its what you have or can get your hands on..
The s2 chassis is thicker and stronger, metal was cheaper and less competition for price

I was assuming the OP had one sitting around or access to one.

No awesome idea just trying to create 2, 2a,s have three chassis
Two 2a and one 3
3 is reasonably sound ,the others one has rust bad from engine mounts forward and the other (military chassis) has sound front end but cactus rear cross member. I,m a bit hesitant to cut and shut with front end of chassis , but happy to do rear x member
As stated above numbers are numbers and salvaged number for 3 will be from remnant 2a chassis bound for tip sans numbers
thanks for input I thought everything was interchangeable and I did notice 2a chassis is more robust but rust is rust
Looking at a 1965 series 3[wink11]
Cheers Paul

I thought the series 3 was from 71? A 65 is a 2a? Not 100% sure though....

I think Land Rover put out a limited amount of 2a's on the new improved futuristic series 3 chassis as a R&D project ....you did not hear about it[bigwhistle][bigwhistle][bigwhistle] they are very rare
Nuff said me thinks[bighmmm]

VicRoads don't always know what day of the week it is so they won't pick up on the chassis details but a roadworthy tester might ? Again, I think it's unlikely.
Main difference that seems to cause minor problems is putting a SIII gearbox into a SII chassis so doesn't affect you.
Series IIa (https://www.richardschassis.co.uk/series-chassis/series-iia.html#S2aStandard)
Rest of the changes are fairly minor.

One that has a current mention in another thread is that the diameter of chassis bushes changed at Series 2a suffix H. There will be a few other differences of this sort, but nothing that can't be dealt with easily.

Yes. '65 is definitely 11a and I believe '71 is correct.

I think you already had the idea but if you are going to scrap a chassis, destroy the numbers on them.

With a LandRover anything is possible, Heres a 110 CSW on a Perentie Chassis with a Series 2 firewall . Don't see any padded dash here. (when I say LandRover , I mean proper LandRover which is only includes vehicles with PCD 5x165, yes I'll concede & allow in RRC & D1 )

Also LandRover Series 3 Lightweights up till 1985 have no Padded Dash & fully ADR compliant in Australia .
picture is my 1973 Series 3 but last of production in 1985 are basically identical.

Just looked up ADR's . From what I gather Padded dash ADR's started in 1988 so no dramas putting a Series 2 body / firewall on a Series 3 .
