My 2005 D3 didn't! Just noted Cruise control on my 2009 D3 on cruise control set at 60kph change down a gear when I was on a steep hill and rolling over 60kph! Tried again and it did it again.

Honestly surprised to have engine braking by Cruise control. Does your D3 or D4 do this? I'm not taking about the newer adaptive cruise control.

My D3 2008 did what you mentioned but my D4 3 litre doesn't which i am a little annoyed about.

My 2006 petrol does it - I was very surprised when it did it the first time!

My MY14 TDV6 does not do this. But my work MY15 Ford Ranger does, as did my old work MY12 Falcon ute. I really like it, and was also surprised when the D4 didn’t do it.

My work Prado does it as well.
Usefull in cruise control but Toyota in their wisdom have designed it to happen on a down hill if you have your foot lightly on the brake to maintain speed.
Very annoying. If I wanted to change down I would do it manually.
