hey guys

i went out yesterday and finally upgraded my stereo, and i now have a nice mp3 cd player..............i was gunna buy some speakers but the guy in the shop suggested not...as he said the speakers in landrovers are actually good quality.......................

well i have the stereo now and i beg to differ they can handle NO bass at all, and i have now had to completly turn the bass off!
so i would really like to upgrade them, as i do like to listen to my music loud

so
1. are they hard to change? the two door ones and the rear two in the boot.
2. does anyone know the size of them they look around 4" but i'm not sure
3. does anyone recomend any particualr speaker?

i suppose i need a pretty flat speaker i would of thought???

anyway any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

opps forgot to write that for people who don't know it's a disco 1

Best thing you could do is buy a 2 channel amplifier and a 10" sub woofer in a box (budget about $250 unless your impressionable and the salesman screws you) and it'll be the best bang for your buck as you can run no bass in the speakers, which means they can be loud without distortion because all the bass is supplied by the woofer, it may sound wanky having a sub, but you'll love the sound

Hi dullbird,,
Mrs Swift and i did this some years back,
and Rovercare is dead right,, best bang for your buck, you'll ask yourself why you didnt do it years ago 8)

I actually HAVE the wood insert that goes in the rear drivers side storage bin.

for some reason the D2 area is a different shape

all you would then need is the sub to put in it,,, https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I did the same also.
You can actually cut away some metal from behind the front door speaker and fit slightly deeper units into the door space.
I also made a 10" sub box as above and fitted it into the same spot as Pedro. Used a Rockford Fosgate amp with 2 channels for the front mid range speakers, fitted tweeters, and a sub output. Sounded awesome. The Landie speakers have what I describe as "cardboard" cones that are only good for voice, absolutely usless for music.

Hey Trev--
I keep hearing high pitched noises from the front and have to turn the stereo off to see if its under the bonnett or the tweeters on the A pillar

My old V8 S1 had an extra tweeter for a while, the belt adjuster brg collapsed.

I should add that I disco nected the A Pillar tweeters and added new ones to the door facia. 8)

where did you put the sub? the rear drivers side storage bin.......

my landrover has a bin 8O lol.........are you talking about where the dickie seats go at the back?

see i did think about putting a sub in but i didn't want to lose the only minimal amount of space i had in the boot so thought it wasn't an option...

i have been looking at subs and things on ebay

does anyone actually know the size of the speakers that go in the doors and at the rear anyway

as i can't find the imformation, and if i do decided to get a sub i'll want to up grade these speakers anyway..........

putting a sub in and and amp is it hard to fit what do you do with all the wires etc...... do you like hde them under the carpet or something....

and does the amp just power the sub or the speakers as well...........
there are plenty of amps and subs on ebay what power amp i would i need? is it that i just need an amp that is powerful enough to cope with a high power output of a sub????

as you can tell i don't know alot which sometimes does put me off going to a fitter incase they fill me full of b**lsh*t and make me buy stuff i don't really need

thanks

hmm,
yes, to run ONE 10"sub, you need ONE amp, mine is an AXIS 300W 2 channel, but thats 5 years old now,, the amp was put in another loverly show-box in the drivers side backseat storage area/kick box, where no-one ever saw it  ( 3 door Rosi remember---)

If you are going to all the trouble of a sub,,, you need a head unit with a SEPARATE sub-woofer volume control,, and if you bought a cheapie from autoblarn then your out of luck https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

these things tend to need dedicated cables and power supplies, and unless you install mobile phone kits for a living, I'd let someone else do it.

dont be put off by this,, woofers really are wonderfull https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

i brought a pretty good head unit cost me $400

its a sony xplod cdx-f7710 and pretty sure it has its on subwoofer control on it, in fact i'm almost positive

problem is i would like all this fitted as i don't think i could do it my self (as i would like it done neatly) but like i said before i can't afford to lose the space in the boot as i'm going to get dogs so i can't afford to have a bloody great sub box in there (as much as i would like to) 8O

doesnt need to intrude into the load area,,
you could make it window high, place the sub at the bottom and make a shelf or storage area out of the rest,,

thats what I'm gunna do with the D2,, place the sub at the floor, box it off and use the rest to hide/store snatch, air comp, shackle, etc,, should all fit.

and lest we forget---
it will need a VERY heavy duty grill to protect it, tell the installer to protect it from hammer blows,, he'll get the idea

When I left school I did a traineeship with a car audio company as a car audio equipment repair guy. 1997-98 or so.

I remember we used to get these Landrover Discovery imports through our workshop. Something about them being imported damaged and their good bits being combined with an Aussie Discovery. I think they did this so as to get fancy interiors etc that Aussie spec Discoveries didn't get.

Anyway back to the point. Where we came in was to install the stereo systems. The good bit was we installed either one or two (can't remember) 8 inch subwoofers in the rear door! I mean inside the rear door so you lost no space whatsoever (except for the amp which probably went under one of the front seats). The door was designed to take the subwoofers so all you do is bolt them in. Would be good to put some sound deadener in the door though if it isn't there already.
I am not sure if the imported Discos had different rear doors or if this can be done on an Aussie spec Disco.
I am going to give his a go when I get my Discovery.

Although it is good to have sub control through the head unit you don't really need it (I have the control but no sub  ).

If all you want is good bass then all you need is a head unit with one set of RCA outputs. Run your front and rear speakers from the head unit and the sub off the RCA.
Set up your speakers with fader control as per how you want them and then you can control your sub with the amp controls. This means whenever you want to adjust your bass (other than treble/bass control on head unit) you will need to go to your amp. The reality is you will only do this a few times until you like how it sounds.
You can use the bass control on your head unit to some extent because you will be putting crossovers on your other 4 speakers so the bass never reaches them (therefore they won't distort anymore). Crossovers are a frequency filter. Basically you will want your tweeters getting all the high notes, your mid range speakers getting the mid range and your subwoofers getting the base. You can either make your own crossovers very cheaply (google for it) or buy ready made ones (expensive). Your amp will take care of your sub frequency cut.

Crossovers are the best improvement to your stereo in my book as they will allow what speakers you have to perform at there peak and they are very cheap to make yourself.

Here I even googled them for you https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

hey utemad

thanks for all the info it's nice that you have explained a few things as it does make things a little easier to understand.....and thanks also for the link...........

interesting what you say about the back door that would be perfect......

and i have just found a 10" pioneer sub that has only something like an 8.3cm depth so i imagine that what you say about the door is quite possible.........

you have got me all excited now....... https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ although it doesn't take alot 8O

hey pedro

thanks alot for the pics i see where you were putting it now where the two little back seats are in the boot........

if i'm looking at your picutres right.....

cool that is deffinatly a good idea, think what i might do is decide where i'm going to put the sub then build the box for it myself if it needs it......

then take it to a sound man and get hime to connect it all up etc etc.....
