Hi, Thinking of putting a snorkel on for a Vic HC trip in Nov, I've never been there before and am really looking forward to it. Would I need a snorkel on the medium grade tracks? I won't be doing anything hardcore with the family in the car though. What is the concensus on these two styles of snorkel? They are $130 to $150 on ebay, the safari style one is a bit cheaper but it looks bulky, why have they got to be so big on the guard? I like the look of the other one too but on the side it is moulded with a X on it and looks like the side of a jerry can! I like it otherwise though. It's be much better to be able to fit it without drilling into the body, I hate doing that.

First pic is my car that British 4wd asked me if they could use for the airflow snorkel advertising, quality product but the destructions were based on a d4 which differ slightly from a d3.
Happy with it and would recommend to anyone.

The second pic is not a snorkel - it is a genuine LR Remote Air Intake (RAI) if you use this you will need to modify it to seal and change the air tube inside the guard between the RAI and the air filter box as it is not water proof.

If you want a snorkel I would but a Safari Brand Snorkel as it willo come with everything you need. Safari Snorkel Land Rover Discovery 3 Snorkels for Discovery 3 4x4 Vehicles (https://www.safari4x4.com.au/products/land-rover/discovery-3)

Actually Garry its a Malaysian copy of the RAI (see pic in first link) so probably needs even more work to seal it.

Do yourself a favour and buy a Safari snorkel. They work, they’re a known quantity and have local support for parts if you stuff something up during the install. The templates have been used by hundreds of people and the holes wind up in the right spots. When it comes to drilling holes in your pride and joy, you want it to be right.

Given this thing will be exposed to wind forces and all the rest of it, having it properly attached with bolts and the like — even if it does mean drilling it nto your car — is sensible.

I reckon I paid about $370ish delivered for my Safari snorkel, brand new via an eBay seller. I highly recommend.

Installation is not particularly hard, but does require drilling and cutting of metal components, as well as liberal applications of Sikaflex 227. If you’ve got the tools, some basic know-how and a willingness to have a crack, it’s a half-day job for a novice. Lots of hard to reach spaces and fiddly work. Get some cobalt drill bits for drilling the A-pillar — it’s hardened steel and you’ll kill HSS bits in no time.

Cheers,

— Andrew

Whatever you get it needs to be water tight if you are plan on doing water crossings. As far as I could see the ones you listed didn’t say they were water tight. I’ve got a safari snorkel. Costs a bit more but cheaper than a drowned engine.

I have a D4 but put Lonerangie onto the Airflow one. It is also an Australian product (Dromana in Victoria to be precise) so parts should you stuff up are not hard to come by. Not sure what you could stuff up other than to drill holes in the wrong place. Also it is $$$$ cheaper than Safari. They are also a fully sealed unit. The secret is to use mastic not a silicone based joiner.

+1 Air flow snorkel

I've fitted one myself, the template i must say isn't great, I still used it with minor adjustment. Its very fiddly getting the nuts on the inside of the panel, recommend taking a few screws out of the quarter panel to fit it (give you a bit more room to get your hand up between the body and quarter panel).
With regards to drilling the A-Pillar i wouldn't do it, air flow bracket mounts to the cover on the A-Pillar, I used nutserts to fix to the the cover instead of the plastic thread clips supplied with the snorkel, worked a treat.

Used Sikaflex mastic instead of Silicone.

Used Sikaflex mastic instead of Silicone. The trim doesn't provide much support , I drilled one hole into the A pillar and used the supplied plug and a longer screw.
