Rattle in drawbar

Well after putting up with the rattle for a few weeks finally decided to see what I can do about it and decided to try some brass shims to take up the clearance.

Will see if this works and see how it goes towing with shims in.

There is a bolt hole in the bottom of the receiver that takes up the slack of the tongue.
Unfortunately while there is a bolt hole and thread they never seem to come with the bolt from new so I don’t know the thread size and type. ( I tend to remove mine when not towing, so doesn’t bother me ) have also seen a clamp set up too, I will try to find the link.

I did not see the threaded bolt hole will have a look tomorrow, I like the clamp set up something I have not seen before and will have a look for it I tend to leave it in as have been towing a trailer a couple of times a week plus a little bit of protection for low speed rear Enders.

I use a 25mm m10 from the big green shed. Does the trick.

Mine too & I reckon it is a 5/16" Whit. setscrew (25 years old & plated) Certainly stops any rattle. I tied an old spanner to my tongue so I can use it straight away without losing a good spanner or shifter.

Shouldn't be too hard to re-tap the thread to suit what you can scrounge though.

I posted this a while ago here (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l462-discovery-5-a/265146-bolt-stop-hitch-rattling-receiver.html), an M10 25mm bolt fits the hole which is at the underside of the hitch receiver. Doing a long trip with a rattly trailer (where the coupling doesn't fit the tow ball very well) a couple of weeks ago I noticed that the bolt does work its way loose, so do check and tighten it from time to time.

Fortunately, mine is at the 10 o'clock position in the bend of the receiver. Never had a problem with that but then I didn't drive it all around the country or it may have been a different story. [bighmmm]

That would be a better location than underneath.

Probably. A matching nut is welded to the outer skin of the receiver.

I haven't done this, but I saw it done somewhere, that a piece of steel rod is welded to the bolt head so one leg is longer than the other end & so stops the bolt turning as the long end, being heavier, always wants to hang down.

You'd need to trial fit this to ensure it doesn't foul anything before welding it & that it can be done up ok.


Or I suppose one could drill it through to take a Spring Clip & light chain?

Maybe a couple of beads of weld on the hitch will add enough "Meat" to it to stop it rattling[thumbsupbig]
