Hi, we are new to this Range Rover caper so please bear with us.
We own (or it owns us) a 1986 Range Rover Classic which has had an engine change to a 4.6 ltr V8, we are currently chasing down a surge problem at 1500 rpm. After reading forums I have found a place to start, so I replaced the thermostat and now the perating temp is a lot better but still the problem so I thought I would replace the temperature senor but I need to know what year the engine was built.
Could someone please tell me how to decipher the engine number.
Thanks

I'm guessing only the block got upgraded - so still uses the Lucas Flapper style fuel injection?
So really it all depends on what the inlet manifold is and from what year this is from???

When my '86 RR was upgraded to a 4.6, John Davis Motorworks (now Bruce Davis Performance Landys) fitted different injectors because the originals wouldn't flow enough fuel. That meant replacing the EFI electronics because the old Lucas system wouldn't allow enough fuel to flow through the bigger injectors.
Mine had a Haltech aftermarket EFI system fitted.
This was before the days of the hot wire EFI so that may have also worked had it been available to fit.

Hi All, Thanks for all the ideas, best let you know I'm a girl  and the Rangie owner is a dinosaur and won't use the computer, so you'll just have to put up with me being a bit slow on the uptake about the Rangies bits and pieces.
Ok here we go, we purchased the Rangie back in January 2006, the motor had already been modified we think it is surposed to be a 2001,
the thermostat was just one we picked up at the Autopro shop it's has the temp on it as 88 c on it and it cost about $12.00, the reason for the new thermostat was because the gauge was not moving above a third it's now just left of half.
Your right the the Lucas flapper is still in use.
We seem to have the surging problem under control now, it's just running a bit rich.
The engine number has CR8.37:1 48D will this do or do you want all the numbers.
Thanks again guys
